I received the latest copy of RC heli monthly yesterday and began reading the article about the new JR X12 radio. About a page into the article I noticed they listed this WARNING caption in such a way that it suggested the remote will cause a breach in national security. In the warning they basically hint that if you use the radio's subtrim and dial in expo within your swash mix that it causes the most horrid swash plate interaction and it's the worst they have ever seen. Also it's not just limited to the x12 but the DX7 and the x9303. Well lo and behold I just purchased an X9303 and subsequentially ponied up the hardcore cash( for me) recquired as well. Now I know that trying to minimize subtrim is ideally what one should try to do and any trimming that may need to be done should take place mechanically first as best as possible. However, sometimes I prefer to make miniscule adjustments electronically and I almost indefinately use some degree of expo in my cyclic (around 10-20 %. It's just my preference of how I like my sensitivity. After reading this article it really put a bad taste in my mouth the way they displayed this so called "finding" during their review and testing of th remote. It makes me curious as to what they are really getting at with this and if it really is a major issue or just something they want to bring up because Horizon doesn't give them enough money each month for advertising. What I'm asking is this a non-issue or not?

It is not expo with the cyclic (aileron and elevator).

It is the EXP on the Swash Mix page. It dials out interactions and non-linear collective motion due to the servo arms moving in an arc.

The fact that a lot of subtrim will cause this function to exhibit strange behavior has been known for a while. WELL before this magazine published it. IN fact, do a search and you will see mention of it.

The problem is there are 3 different functions called Expo on JR/Spektrum radios. And they are all different.

Normal expo (cyclic and rudder) changes the stick to control mapping to increase or decrease stick sensitivity.

Throttle and Pitch curve expo smooth the curves. A V curve ends up more like a U curve.

Swash Mix expo compensates for the non-linear motion of the servo arms, as has been said. This is the ONLY one that is effected by using subtrim. How much subtrim is too much? I haven't really tried to find out, but I use Swash Mix expo on all my helis, and have not noticed any awful interactions.

I wrote that article and the measurements were performed by John Kos.

The reason it is mentioned is because the 12X is a "Pro-Class" radio, and as such is put under the microscope with a little more magnification. I report on what we see and measure. It's ultimately up to the consumer smacking down hard earned scratch to determine if any issues found with a given product are enough of a concern to warrant not purchasing it in leiu of something different.

That being said, there are those out there that strive to get the perfect setup. This is one such issue that can prevent that (if sub-trim is used). That's the point I was trying to get across, nothing more - nothing less. The 12X is an excellent radio - I think that came across loud and clear.

I can assure you however, that advertising has absolutely nothing to do with these reviews.
