I have been flying my HBFP for about a month now and have gotten past the newbie crashes and rebuilds. I am now to the point that I can hold the tail and hover in my garage for a full battery without crashing.
On calm days, I fly outside and I am able to fly forward, reverse, left and right - but only if I hold the tail towards me. If the heli gets turned sideways to me, or coming directly at me, I always have to flip the tail around towards me in order to recover.
I am wondering if there is some logical progression I should be doing to advance my flying. When I am outside, I can run through battery after battery without crashing - but only if I hold the tail. It doesn't seem like I am getting any closer to being able to do forward flight with turns.
I would just like to know how some other people made it over the hump from hovering to forward flight.
Any comments are appreciated,
Will

T-boxes. Hover tail-in. Fly slowly forward a few yards and stop. Keep the tail pointed towards you. Fly left a few yards and stop. Fly back to the right 'til it's right in front of you again and stop. Fly right...etc.
Keep doing this until it's easy. Then start making the left/right moves but putting some rudder in so that the nose is kinda pointing the direction you're moving the heli. as you get more comfortable, stop for shorter amounts of time until you're sort of making "wavy" flights from side to side.
Work on side-in hovering. Start by turning the heli 45º to the left or right and holding it there until you can't stand it any longer. Bail out to tail-in. Keep repeating, moving the nose closer and closer to full left or right. It'll take a while, but you WILL get there.

what you should work on now is turning the heli around in a controlled hover. Don't try and hold a tail out hover yet, just work on turning the heli in place without crashing off to the side, when you can do that then work on hovering tail out, then after that side in hovering. By then you should have figured out how to fly in circles and the rest of FF flight is just practice, but FF is much easier then hovering so remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
also, check out my website for more info on the HBFP, and the other esky helis.

One thing that really worked for me after being comfortable with tail-in and side-in hovering was to start doing figure 8's since it's only nose-in for a short time before you turn the heli and are back to tail in.
