Just curious to know if, after flying their Ion for the last few weeks, anyone is having any [non-battery related] problems to speak of?
Anyone trying different motor/speed control combinations or gear ratios?

No problems yet. This heli is everything Min. said it would be. Only thing I may want to change is the gear ratio, can't get use to the rotor turning at 1950 rpm. So far have 19 flights, and this thing has huge amounts of power.

We have 55 tooth layshaft gears to replace the 52 tooth that's in there now. This would take roughly 100 rpm off of the headspeed.

Shannon's Ion-X is still going strong after a bunch of flights. Only problem he has had that I know of is a battery pack has failed after draining it to low on the first charge. That Ion-X ROCKS!!!

Chris,
Have you experimented with the 55 tooth gear? I really don't want to screw up a good thing. Should all the temps stay about the same? Thanks for any input you could give.

Someone in our group got two Ions and the Speeed control caught fire in both of them. Why?
I will get one and I do not want to have the same experience.

Yes, the 55 tooth gear will get you 22:1 which is what my Ion flew with last summer. If you saw the videos at IRCHA you know how well that worked. Everything will run a bit cooler and for longer. We are trying to get to the bottom of the two systems that Jon has had go awry. Both were in the same bird by the way. It is on it's way to us now for evalution. He has also built two other Ion-x' that are both doing well...

Mine has worked flawless- no hot parts. I did have the one Batt issue- but that was my fault. I love mine- loads of power- and COOL :glasses2:

Hay Travis,
Did you get yours done yet? I have 6 flights on my second one and 72 on the first one. I have them both setup the same and am using the same model program so I can fly them back to back and never worry about changing programs :)

Now I realize how you got as good at this as you are. 78 flights in less than 3 weeks. That's sick. I've only had about 12. Next time we meet up at Brooks, I've got something to show you... ;)
Finished putting the airframe together after getting back from the field today.
I'm still waiting on all of the electronics [batteries, chargers, servos, gyro, ...] so it will probably be a little while.

Spoke with Hacker today about their motor and speed controls. The owner / expert (Shawn) suggested that pilots who flow below 1000 feet and temps below 80 deg F should change gear ratio's. He has been doing this for years to compensate for "thicker" air. I plan on trying Miniatures new 55 tooth gear to see if it helps. This will change the gear ratio from 20.8:1 to 22.0:1. I'll let everyone know how this works by next week.

That is incredible the RPM these suckers turn up. The instant on full bore power is downright awesome.
Electrics are facinating.
