My buddy and I went to Fry's today looking for stuff for the Ions'... Fry's has shit power supplys.......

We got these fire safes for $28... more than big enough to hold 4 5s4p packs...

Significant other wouldn't think too kindly of me burning house down.... I know the charge safe circuitry is supposedly avialable now...but not gonna trust my house to it...

Good thinking Mike. :D

Also you guys might want to consider a Halon extinguisher or some CO2 units at the field when you fly these.

If those packs go "Thermo Nuclear" on you the CO2 and the Halon will take out the heat and save the electronics.

Dry chemical (your standard ABC extinguisher) will make a mess and destroy your other electronics.

Can't wait for Brooks to see you crank on that ION. :D

For what it's worth...I've been told "class D" is the extinguisher you want to use on a Lithium fire.

Chris,
Class D is a "metalX" type extinguisher. It would be the one to put the fire out, but they are VERY messy and will totally destroy your Servos, Speed control, gyro etc.
Also most "class D" extinguishers you can buy over the counter are actually ABCD type and contain the corrosive Potassium nitrate or something similar.
If you hit it with a CO2 or Halon enough to knock it down you may be able to save the rest of the electronics by pulling the battery free of the ship.

I am not suggesting you use it on a full blown battery fire, just in case of a crash and short on the cells getting hot.

Sand is the best method of putting out a "metal" fire and will not harm anything just get it dirty. :D, but a bucket of sand is heavy. :D

Damn I knew those Fire inspection classes would be handy someday. :D

Jason, do you know of a good source for a halon extinguishers?.

PS: The Field extension is looking great , why wait for Brooks come on over and join us for a day of flying. Doc usually flies on Mondays and Wednesdays. I fly when ever its nice ( a retired thing)

Wayne,
I don't but a quick look in the Yellow pages for a fire extinguisher shop they should have one.
Halon is on the bad boy list of non eco friendly stuff so they may have to order one for you.
I would go for a CO2 myself. The cooling factor is greater on them.
Heavier and a bit bulkier, but better IMO.

I can't wait for July. I am going to try and bring JZ up sometime in the next couple weeks. I am tied up for the next 2 and he is going on a trip so after that we will be up.

Retired.. I wish :D
