I was going to make the jump from Airtronics for 20 + years to the 14MZ. Then Futaba support told me that the 14MZ will only do Futaba FM negative modulation (not JR and Airtronics positive mod.)? Can this possibly be true? Sounds like a major oversight.

It is true and is not an oversight. The North American market is the only market where there is a difference in the FM modulation frequency shift. It was done on purpose to maintain a proprietary difference in the brands. Airtronics is the only major brand that has selectable shift on their newer transmitters. Your want a 14mz then you have to buy negative shift receivers. Those would be Futaba, Hitec negative shift, FMA, and several other brands. Of course Futaba really hopes you buy their brand.

As does every other radio manufacturer. JR will tell you to only use JR, Airtronics says to only use Airtronics and so on.

Here's a fun one. If you can fly on ham band, then Futaba AND JR use the same shift for a normal PPM RX. You can fly any one of them with any TX. Just has to be ham band on PPM. Doesn't work on PCM. And ALL the PCM are different. Airtronics, Futaba, JR, Hitec. None works with the other. Another "oversight" no doubt.
