I have a Hobbico 12v starter and it will barely turn my Raptor with an O.S.70 engine over. I have even used a 12v tractor battery. Can someone with a similar heli tell me a good starter to use and possibly where to get it???

I was noticing this yesterday myself. Mine used to start better than it does now. How old is your battery? I test discharged mine and could only pull 1.5 amps not sure if that is "good" or not.

Well, this 70 is new to me and I have not flown it really. I have started it a couple of times with the Hobbico 90 but it is hell for the starter to turn that engine over. My battery is new. I am looking for a starter that will turn over the 70 engine that is not an arm and a leg.

I will put picks of my setup later. I am using a sullivan Dynatron with Miniature aircraft battery holders on it. Man it looks nice and it works , even on my 91's. The trick is the combination of the starter and the batterries. I am using 24 or 2800 mah nicad packs with 2 7 cell packs running in series. It works for a whole FF on alot of helis. More later got to go. Might have picks in my Gallery.

Well my point was no matter how good the starter if the battery (even a new cheap one) cannot spin it had enough it sucks. Have you tried hooking it to a car battery?

But anyway.. I use a Sullivan H--Tork (http://www.sullivanproducts.com/StartersContent.htm) but it is only rated to .60 it starts my 80 easier than my 60 for some reason. YS better than OS :dontknow

I've heard alot of good things about the Sullivan starters. Maybe that is what I need to get.

I have the Sullivan Dynatron starter with 2 7 cell 2400 race packs and it will start anything except for any OS 91. There is a club member that is running his Dynatron on 2, 12V, 7amp hour gel cells for 24V. That will start anything.
The Dynatron is rated for up to 24V.
I use my Dewalt 18V cordless drill to start my 90's, works great.

i use a dynatron on 14 volts to kick over my ys 91. the only time it stalls is when the engine is hydrolocked.

Ditto to 14v or higher. You can get a pair of NiMh 3300 6 series packs on ebay for under $30 shipped. These are the batteryspace cells, not the greatest, but it's only for a starter...

I made a DIY bracket to hold the packs on my Sullivan starter (commercial setups are available), and it cranks WAY better then using even a car battery!

I have the Dynatron setup like Clint and I ahve never found a motor that it would not spin if it was not badly hydro'd. You could probably break a motor withit. It has top started all my gas machines I have owned as well, including my Bergen Machines. I am runnning whatever packs Clint is mine came from Mac's as well through Ray.

I switched to deans connectors on my Hobico 180 and it would turn a .91 over pretty well except on cold days. I have the same setup as clint now and have never had any problems.

I use a mini gear drive starter and folks who thought it wouldn't start their 91's were surprised when it spun the hell out of it...
I'm using 2 7Amp Gel cells in parralel..

I have used it in a pinch to start mine. Just bout a long 6mm hex and cut it down (with a dremmel) before the bend.

I have the hobbico torqmaster for my os 70 and had a hard time until I made sure I had VERY good conections to the battery. If running through a panel that will be the problem.

I use a sullivan dynatron with 2 8cell 3600mah nimh packs wires in series for around 20 volts. I attach the batteries with a KSL stick pack mount and brackets. I can get alot of starts out of a charge on my YS91 with this setup. I bout the packs from cheapbatterypacks.com and they custom build your packs for you in about any configurations you wish.
Hope This Helps

Its junk. Grease will leak from around the output shaft and sling it all over you. also the gear reduction makes it spin kinda slow. Its also hard on one-way shafts. I purchased one about a year ago and sent it back two weeks later.

Skip the hydratorque. Steve Dixon had one and it was a POS. Get the Dynatron setup if you never want to have to buy one again.
