I don't know how many of you Ion drivers out there play with the smaller stuff but...

The new 1010 charger from TP, when coupled to their balancer and their ProLite packs, lets you charge at up to 3C! Pretty stinkin' cool. I've been flying my little planes all day and can charge the batteries back up in minutes....

Things is gettin' good...

Great news Chris,

So all we need now is safe 150 Ahr main charging batteries and chargers/balancers that can handle all this. I'm sure it will all happen soon!

Cheers,

You'd need 24 amps into the battery (if it's an 8 amp battery) which would mean a charger capable of a little better than 500 watts and a source good for 42-ish amps. Still well within the range of what a good deep cycle should do.

The real problem though is that you cannot do this with packs that are over 1P. So let's push for those high capacity cells....something around 4 amps would be great. You could charge it at 12 amps, the charger would need to be good to 250 watts and you'd need a source that could do 21 amps...very do-able.

Most draw around 30 amps on average when flying, so a 4 Ahr battery should give 8 minutes, or say 6 safely, which is pretty much ideal. 6 amps out would mean a re-charge time of 15 minutes per pack.....

I have the TP 1010 with the 210V balancer and charge my 4S 2000mah prolite T-rex packs at a conservative 1.5C. The fast charge algorithm takes 35 minutes at 97% fully charged. With 4 packs of these, I am flying all day. The ballancer communicates to the charger what the cell imbalance is, and balances accordingly. If the difference is too great, it will slow the charge rate automatically or stop all together. It also ramps up to the full charge rate pretty quickly. The best lithium charger I have ever owned.

I've been been using a couple TP1010's w/ balancers since Jan. and have been extreemly pleased so far. I've been charging my 4S 2100's (TRex) at 3C - my packs are usually ready in 15 min ('cause they're never completely discharged).

I've done a few 10S4P (2x 5S4P) series charge cycles at 5A - looking real good so far. My Ion's will be coming out of winter hibernation soon so these bad boys are going to see some real work in the next little while.

Best LiPo charger I've owned to date.
Anybody want to buy some Orbit Pro's :D?

I am still a bit scared to charge at 3C. 15 minutes, huh? I may have to try that.

No kidding, it does work. I've been doing it for several weeks now and all is well so far.

Chris,

What packs are you charging? I know that you can do that with the Prolites however I am thinking of getting a few FlightPower 5S1P 3700s and the web sight said to charge at no more than 1C.

Hi Alex

I have been wondering about those big 1P packs too. My guess is that they will work with higher charge rates as well. But of course, the manufacturers are gonna be very leary of this, so your on your own. You will have to make an adaptor cable for the balancer. If you were to try it, I'd recommend starting at lower rates, say 1.5C, and work your way up. Also, charge out in the yard or garage, just in case.

I will be getting some of these kinds of packs soon and I intend to try higher charge rates.

I have a FP 4s1p 3700 and the manual states it can be charged at 2C for the first 90%.

Sweet! 1.5C is all I need. At 30-40 minutes perpack is fine by me. I already have the wiring diagram for the ballancer and ribbon cable so it is simply a matter of soldering up a connector. FP it is...

Thanks guys...

If you make up adapters Alex, I know Bobby and I would both be interested in one.

Thanks in advance!!

Funny we are all thinking on the same level. Check out this thread:

Looks like perhaps we will be able to order these in the near future.

I've had one of these chargers for a month or so and it is great, although I have tried charging at 3C

I'm going to be selling my Schulze 636 and getting another TP. I haven't used my Schulze since I got the TP.
