DX6i for cheap basic, get started radio. DX7 for moderate cost, but very good radio. X9303 for better radio at higher cost. 12X for cost is no object.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it...
I am what you can call a near-brand newbie so not much experiences had with helis.
I have a DSX9 (Australia/Europe version of X9303) as my pretty much first decent radio, but I always wanted to get something that will carry me for a long time.
You can always go to some decent and cheap alternatives like the DX6i, that covers your 6 channels (correct me if i'm wrong).
You can go all the way up to the Futaba 14 channel stuff (I'm not familiar with Futaba) and they although still uses 6 basic channels, its more about the mixing.
See how much you need, how much are you willing to spend, and go from there!
Sorry if I made any incorrect assumptions.

I am interested in upgrading from my DX7 to the X9303, but do not want a package that includes a receiver or servos. Do any vendors sell the X9303 without the receiver?
Horizon Hobby offers the radio without the servos for $630, but this option includes the receiver. As much as I like the radio, I do not like it enough to spend more on an item that I will not use. I do not want to buy it and then try to sell the receiver.

Yes, some do, but it is against Horizon policy.

Why is it against Horizon's policy to sell a transmitter without a receiver? I used Horizon's online process to ask, but have not received a response yet.
If I had owned an X9303 and wanted to replace it after a theft or other loss, or maybe just because I want another, why should I have to buy it with a receiver that is not required? This is a rhetorical question, but if anyone knows the answer, I would appreciate hearing it.

Because they package the radios in certain configurations, and they don't want delaers pulling Rxes out of package and selling them separately.
Why? Who knows, but some dealers have lost their ability to buy from Horizon over this.
But some dealers still do it, but few advertise that fact.

The best place to buy the jr 9303 with receiver is barnfloor.com i just bought one couple weeks ago for 509.00 and the 7 point curves make a huge differance and i sold the reciever here for 125.00 so not a bad deal and a great radio:)

I bought a used but like new X9303 yesterday that included the 9-channel receiver for less than $500 shipped. It was at a price I was willing to pay for only the transmitter, but I will sell the receiver as well.
I had a pleasant, but unproductive, email exchange with Horizon Hobby about the bundled package. The bottom line is they are sold that way and that is it. I wonder how many sales Horizon Hobby has lost to the other vendors because they will not offer the components separately. They must think that every purchase is a for a baseline system that requires everything.

+1 on this for sure!
I am brand spanking new to RC anything, having just purchased the Phoenix sim, and a couple of mSR's to fly indoors over the winter.
next spring I want to graduate to 400/450 and I have no idea what type of receiver I will want to use.
I was not happy having to pay for a $189 receiver just to get the X9303 that I wanted.
I'm sure the R921 receiver will work just great when I move up to a bigger heli, but I don't like being forced into it. Sure I can sell it, but it's just the fact that this is America dog gone it, and we are all about choice
