I've been trying to get my machine to host multiplayer sessions and it's kicking my butt..
I've got an Earthlink DSL modem;
I've removed my hardware firewall from the network;
I've turned off Trend Micro's software firewall, and Windows Firewall;
and I STILL get failure to locate public IP errors when trying to publlish to the list server..
Any suggestions?

I would bet Earthlink blocks the ports.

I'm betting the Will is right. I have a friend with Earthlink and he is unable to host although he can join.

You need to go into your router and do some port forwarding so that your router can forward outside traffic to your computer. as far as what ports and how to do it go to realflights webpage and go to support and do a search. i am not sure which ports they are though.

Well, after an hour in chat, and another on the phone with Earthlink, the determination is that you CAN host with ADSL.... IF you pay an additional $15/month for a static IP..
I haven't decided if its worth it yet, and they cannot guarantee it will work with G3..
The basic ADSL service uses a dynamic IP that masks you IP, what you get with ipconfig is not the same as whatismyip.com, the IP is forwarded on their end..
Bummer..

I have been working on hosting today. The problem is simple - and pretty daft too. G3 "gets" your public IP by asking the Windows DirectPlay API for your IP address. Problem is, your IP address will of course be your internal IP if you are behind a router or firewall as you are hidden behind the external one. The IP you want to "give" to G3 is in fact your external IP on your router/firewall.
You can set up port forwarding or create rules in your firewall for the TCP and UDP ports used in G3, but as long as they insist on using the Directplay API to get the IP address there are going to be major headaches.
Apparently enabling UpnP on routers allows Directplay to get the real IP from the router rather than the local PC IP btu I'm dealing with a business firewall at my end so I can't.
I adminsiter a very complex firewall, and host a fair few game and voice servers but this is a real pain in the butt.
G3 simply needs an "advanced" setting where you can force your own choice of IP address to publish. That would solve nearly everyone's problems in one second. Simply get your external IP from your router/firewall, setup port forwarding/rules and then whack the external IP in G3 and it woudl be fine.
As it stands - I can't host from my office doe to this limitation. I'm looking into finding a util to force entries into DirectPlay as we speak.
