That was really nice.
So what is your headspeed in that video?
Also what is the total weight with full fuel?
I am starting to see a new AP ship forming here. :D

headspeed is governed at 875rpm don`t know the weight, I will measure it when I can. :)

Please do!
875 is fantastic. I bet it is smooth as the proverbial babies butt. :D

It weighs 16Kgs with 2.4 ltrs fuel, which lasts 21 minutes. Empty weight is 14 Kgs

Any chance that a US distribitor will carry the Vario XLV 2 stage? I'm in the market for a LARGE pod and boom using this turbine. The Vario XLV has the size that I'm after. I'm glad to see the fuel tank in the correct place too. Is that the R22 head?
I'll take mine with a 3 or 4 balded main, 2500-3000 mm rotor, and can we double or triple up on that main belt for redundancy? Loosing your only drive belt would be more excitement than listening to the turbine for the first time.

DKTec, I started with the basic XLV which I bought second hand with gasser engine, then HobbyParts did the conversion kit for me, they have a conversion kit now for Jet Cat SPH5 or Wren with the possibilities of turning either turbine to face to the front or back, your best bet would be to get in touch with them direct to discuss your particular requirments, that is the VR22 standard head, I like you had concerns about the single belt but with the correct ratio in the drive system the belt has been proven to do the job, if you were going to do something different a wider belt is available but the large belt driven pulley would need to be made wider
This is something I am working on at the moment

Hey CJ! With the FAA ordeal going on here, I have put the 2 stage on hold but my tax return is pushing me to go for it anyway. :smokin: I still want the short wide belt config with the Cat.

Chopperjockey...
No offence or pun intended, only pure interest as a mechanic...
That exhaust on the Wren-conversion looks awfully close to what appear to be your fuel tank.
Any problems with heat?
Or is that big cooling-fan (aka Rotor) above the build enough?
Thanks for showing! :-)
Cheers,
Daniel

DKTek,
Is this belt short and wide enough?
Danyboy,
you can see from this angle the exhaust is well clear with no problems

Nice CJ, that'll do. :D
So, which do you like best? The Wren or Cat for the XLV?
chopper jockey

Personally I prefer the Wren for performance and service back up. However it's a pig to set up the throttle and pitch curves. You really have to be on the ball to set the throttle response correctly. I'm still testing and tweaking it now...
Plus's for the Wren are:-
Exceptional quality
Cheaper by far.
Excellent after service if required
More flexible exhaust pipe options
a little more power than the cat (imo)
Plus's for the cat are:-
Exceptional quality
built in governor
built in kero start
easier to set up
a little quieter
Additionally, I also use the Orbit ECU which supports kero start on the Wren.
When set up correctly, I feel I shall have to fit a governor as well. I certainly do not want to over speed the head on the XLV. and I shall be looking at metal grips to offer greater safety. :D
