Hello all! I just ran my Raptor 50 SE up for the first time! I noticed the the engine seems to disengage from the rotor ?

Which is the most likely culporate? The Clutch bell and shoe assy or the one way clutch housing.

After it disengages the engine overspeeds....... I immediately cut the throttle and then let the rotor head slow down. At this point if I rotate the rotor head backwards I hear a click and I can spool up the the rotor head again.

I put grease in the one way housing when I assembled it.....is it possible I put too much or not enough? I couldn't get the CLUTCH grease so I used a high quality gear lube I had for my bush saw gear.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

John

Oneway sprages aren't particularly keen to having grease in them. The rollers need to move around a bit to engage, and the grease will prevent that, and allow them to slip as well, since grease has a very high film strength.

I wou7ld suggest you take the main gear out, and remove the bearing from the gear, and check to see that all the rollers are still in thier proper place. Then take the bearing to your favorite auto shop and see if you can wash it out in their solvent tank. After that hit it with some "Brake and electric motor cleaner" don't use carb cleaner or regular brake cleaner. They are too harsh and will degrade3 the plastic cage in the bearing. Even some rubbing alcohol may work. Jut get it clean. After that, a few drops of light oil are all you need. Some say ATF works great. I usually just give it a squirt from what ever type spray lube is handy.

Speags don't need a bunch of heavy lubrication like other bearings, because under the laoded state, they don't move (don't wear), and their movement is contained to an unloaded state, so they will not generally wear out. IMHO the raptor (V1 anyway) is not a good design, as the sprag carries the side load of the belt tension. I think they cured that in the V2 with the solid belt pulley that doesn't ride on the sprag.

Keep your sprage bearing clean and smooth, and you should be ok. I can't remember if the raptor's sprag engages the main shaft directly, or if the bearing has a sleeve that goes around the mainshaft. Either way, check to see if the engagement surface is chewed up, if so replace the sprag and the shaft or sleeve.

Hope this helps.
