Hi,

I am trying to decide on a motor for the Beam E4.

Looking for an efficient motor for sport flying and mild 3D. Right now, flight time is most important to me. I want to start off with 3S lipos.

Here is what I have found:

- Scorpion HK-2221-8 V2 (3600 kV)
- Scorpion HK-2221-10 V2 (3000kV)
- Scorpion HK-2221-12 V2 (2600kV)

- Neu 1107H/2Y (3300 kV)
- Neu 1107/2Y (3300 kV)

- Hacker A20-6XL 8 pole (3500 kV)
- Hacker A20-6XL 10 pole (2500 kV)

- Medusa MR-028-032-3400 V2 (3400 kV)
- Medusa MR-028-040-3400 V2 (3400 kV)

- AON V2815-3500 (3500 kV)

- Mega ACn16/15/3F (3000 kV)
- Mega ACn16/20/2F (3100 kV)

- Align 430L (2550 kV)
- Align 430L (2800 kV)
- Align 430L (3150 kV)
- Align 430L (3550 kV)
- Align 430L (4050 kV)

- Align 430X (3550 kV)
- Align 430X (4050 kV)

- Align 430XL (3700 kV)

- E-flite 420 Helicopter (3800 kV)
- E-flite 440 Helicopter (4200 kV)

What do you guys think?

Thank you,
Frank

I think you're probably going to find that the Scorpion HK2221-8 http://www.bmkdesigns.net/Scorpion-HK-2221-8V2-Brushless-Motor-pr-295.html is the hands down favorite for sport flying in the Beam or any other 450 size heli. For 3D flying the Scorpion HK2221-6 http://www.bmkdesigns.net/Scorpion-HK-2221-6V2-Brushless-Motor-pr-328.html usually gets the nod. I have a couple of HK2221-8's in my Beam and T-Rex and love them. I also have a -6 but it's way too much power for my capabilities.

Hi Joe,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I appreciate it.

I think the -8 would be a great starting point for me (do you lube your motor bearings every 10th flight or so?). On a 11T pinion at 75%-95% throttle?

I am thinking Scorpion 35A or 45A ESC, and 2200-2600mAh lipos. Thunder Power has a new great lipo out: 3S1P, 2600mAh, 18C-30C, same weight and size as a regular 2200 pack. Sounds like a good sport flying combo to me, with emphasis on flight time.

Servos I am thinking JR285MG on cyclic, JR 3500G on tail, and Logictech 2100T gyro, all on 5V.

Any thoughts?

Thank you,
Frank

Frank,

I'm running 11t pinions on both birds. 85% throttle. I took them both out Thursday for the first time. They've both seen a LOT of hovering in the house but this was the first time outside with these motors since building the Beam and getting the T-Rex flight ready again. I put almost 6 minutes on each one. Only hovering with 2 slow close in circuits. No real loads placed on them. When I charged the batteries they both took right around 800mah! Of course if I had been using the collective at all the charge amount would have been much higher. I'm sure with the relaxed way I want to fly I'll be able to see close to 10 minute flight times without any problem. If I can get 7 or so when I get the Hughes 500 fuse mounted up I'll be a very happy camper. I'll have the Eagle Tree mounted up in one of the birds for the next time out.

The NEW Hk22 1620 kv scorpion ..

13t on 100 flat throttle , outrage 6s 1300ma 25c and 60a 6s esc with 6v bec !!
8min 3d on my old 450 so should be able to squeeze 8:30 or maybe 9min of 3d with the more efficiant BEAM chassis.
will soon find out.

high amp low cell count setups kill (wear out !) lipos sooner and take longer to recharge more MA REQ.,.. less flight time avail per day per pack ...AS RECHARGING a heavily overamped lipo takes time! to cool down !! and then charge back to peak..

Wow, sounds impressive. Any battery tray mods necessary or CG issues?

NONE at all , it weighs the same as a 2600ma 3s pack ..

and fits snugly under the stock canopy

the scorpion has only just been released !! in such a low KV !!

excited is not the word, its all about same power, cooler cells and more recharges out of the pack ,and more on the same day...

no losses only plusses as i see it...

Would be nice

What do you think oldschool

I dont see why you couldn't use 2 - 3 cell 1000mah packs if you can make or procure a parallel Y-harness, there are some negatives as to added weight with two smaller packs and some added resistance with the extra connectors and wires but it would certainly work.

Just Go Fly 500TH is a great motor on the Beam. I get 7 minutes flips, loops, rolls and fff. Comes down cool and never overheats the esc. I'm running CC35.

yes you can ...

the outrage 1300's ae a 6s pack.... but you could use 2 3s packs for 6 as well...

its all good, you gain by having to put less Ma'h into the packs as they are smaller and recharge faster.

I have flown the JGF500TH on my Mini Titan. I´m a newb by all means when i comes to RC helicopters but noticed a huge improvment in "newb performance" with this engine. Longer battery life, motor, ESC and battery comes down completly cool. I´m starting my E4 build in a couple of days and already got a new 500TH sitting on the desk in front of me. Really love this motor!

Can anyone give a run time and performance comparison between the Scorpion HK-2221-8 V2 and the Align 430xl.
I'm trying to decide on what motor to get with my new Beam.

with the scorpion -8 13T pinion, 2500mah battery pack, i can fly for 5 minutes, with the align, same pinion and battery 4 min 30 sec. 3200 head speed

Thank you guys for the responses. I am going to order a beam e4 from my LHS. They are giving me a great deal. $299.00 for the kit alone. The problem is that they can't get a scorpion motor. They can get a Align 430xl. The other option is to order the premium kit that comes with the motor. They get it for me for $440.00. What would you guys do?

If purchased online:

Motor: $60
Blades: ~$40
CC45 ESC: ~$90

So... $299 + $60 + $40 + $90 = $489

Sounds like a good deal but I've never heard of the ESC before. It's got the capacity but is an unknown for me.

I noticed about a 20% increase in flight time on my T-Rex 450 when I went from the Align motor to the Scorpion so no matter what, I'd buy that motor. I bought my Beam from my LHS and he didn't mind that I bought the motor elsewhere. You should not feel compelled to buy something you don't want just to buy local. It's enough that you're buying the kit and any potential accessories.

Well, i think I will get the Premium Kit, based on the your input and availability. I'm more of a sports flier right now, and leaning more towards run time vs performance. Would a 11t pinion be OK with that motor or would the head speed be just to slow? Like for flips and rolls?

Thanks Craig
