Hey Guys
Just a quick survey to see how many of you mount you Tail servo in the Frame or out on the Boom
Mine and Bobs are both Boom mounted as I believe a better C of G is achievable and i also like the convenience of it on the boom. its easier to set up the tail as i like and its also easier to change and adjust the Belt.
I'm thinking that i may eliminate the frame mount option for my heli and use the space for something else like Gyro or RX mounting etc
Cheers all
Ben

I guess it's all personal preference..
If at all possible, i like to keep the tail servos in the frame, more protected from any blade to boom impact or boom to ground impact during an ugly crash.
I don't know what kind of force is transferred through the hollow boom on a blade impact, but i'd rather not have a high end servo attached to the boom unless the frame option is no longer possible at all.
That said, only two of my helis have the servos mounted in the frames, but it's because they don't fit in the frames heheh..
When i do the hurri stretch, i may be forced to mount it on the boom.. but i'm hoping to still keep things in the frame.
As for COG, It's never been a problem, but if it was, i'd rather relocate all moveable electronics a bit further back in order to keep the tail servo in the frame.

You have a fair point about protection from crash damage
I still believe that boom mounting is more versatile though.

Frame mount for me, but I wouldn't lose sleep if I couldn't

I use the boom mount on both my 550's and like the fact I can adjust the belt...or remove the boom without messing up the adjustment on the tail....
Have had several major crashes and the servo always seems to survive...
Well I'm off to the hospital for my prostate surgery in about 5 minutes......
Hope to be back on line in a few days......
keep me in your prayers....

Hurry back Mike...here's to a fast recovery!:cheers
as far as where to mount my servo...boom mount of course..easier to deal with when adjusting belt tension.. besides, in a normal blade strike, teh boom will protect the servo.. as far as the boom hitting the ground.. not worried about that.. if I'm flying backwards tail down close to the ground.. then I'm asking for trouble...or I'm already in so deep that no matter where the servo is mounted it's about to take a hit..

Good Luck Mike Hope all goes well
And dont forget the inflatable Doughnut for whne you leave hospital!!
i must say i use the Gaui boom mount and never had a problem the gyro is more vulnerable to damage than a underslung tail servo

The closer to the cg, ideally at the center of the main shaft, that all the mass is the faster the machine can rotate.

Wow
I am surprised at how evenly it is split. I thought there would have been a marked preference for one.
Thanks for the response guys I will definitely leave the frame mount option on my new frame.
Cheers

of course Ben, you need to find out how many of the boom mounted ones are CF frames (should be all of the CF framed hurris are boom mounted) and how many plastic framed hurris are boom mounted... or better yet, how many plastic frames are boom mounted compared to frame mounted...
or just leave the option for either like Gaui did :D

1 Plastic framed hurri, frame mounted tail servo.
1 CF framed hurri, frame mounted tail servo.
It's nice to be able to just take off a crashed/mangled boom, put on a new boom, adjust the belt, hook up the push rod/servo arm again to the servo and fly.
No need to ever move or adjust the tail servo after a crash.

of course, if you have to adjust the belt tension, you have to adjust the tail linkage...
either way works great.. it's just nice to have the choices...

I've changed booms several times on both helis after crashes but never had to adjust any linkage, just replaced the boom/belts, tensioned the belts back up to where i run em, powered up the servos, put servo arm back on at top dead center, and the tails were still perfect and had full range just as before. I guess it's because the booms and belts have been the same measurements/tension.
