DX9 Timer function

Can someone tell me if the timer can be set to come on with the throtle stick rather than a swicth?
I have been told it can but only in sailplane mode and not when in heli mode.

The only way I can initiate the timer on my heli version is with the bottom left menu button or the trainer switch.
