Guys - My Raptor has just started doing a nodding dog thing in the hover after months of being silky smooth. I've gone over the machine with a fine tooth-comb and found nothing out of the ordinary so far.

My blade tracking is good. I've also checked that the main shaft is still straight (although it has never been involved in a crash or heavy landing). I did once have a very similar thing happening and it ended up being chaffing on the Elevator servo cable but I've checked the cable this time around and it looks fine. Ideas???

Check the spindle and throw some silicon dielectric grease on the dampeners.

Thanks Andy I'll check the spindle. I think one of my paddles was slightly out of alignment (maybe 1 to 1.5 degrees) too although they are both tight. There was a new fluttering noise too earlier along with the nodding. The oscillation once it started tended to get worse and worse.

Check the head block, make sure there is no play between the mainshaft and head.
Headspeed could also be an issue, but if it's making a fluttering sound, something has worked loose.

In addition to all of the above check the condition of the dampers.
Dampers do have a limited useful life and do get used up just like fuel and glow plugs.

Thanks guys. I'll take a closer look at all the head components.

I just had the same thing happen and the elevator servo turned out to be the culprit. Give the servo a thorough checkover, work it out, let it warm up, and patiently look for it to go haywire at any particular position throughout its operating range. Try adding a little bit of finger pressure while checking.

I had the same problem. IT was a worn headblock and dampners. Red dampners and the plastic headblock were only lasting about 5 flights. I switched to a metal headnlock and CX dampners and the problem went away.

Wow... 5 flights? Was that 5 hard 3D flights? I'm starting to bang mine around a little and that makes me worried.

BDIS beats on it pretty hard. Getting better every time I see him fly.

BDIS beats on 'IT' frequently from what I've overheard...

I had that too some time ago - the Elevator lead was rubbing on the clutch bell and was nearly though the servo insulation.

Found out what was wrong though. I had recently changed the metal head out (because I overtightened the locking ring and snapped it) for the stock plastic head, and although it shouldn't have made any difference, my Metal Stabilizer Control set ended up being too tight i.e. it was clamping against the flybar carrier and causing a fair bit of resistance. Once this was sorted she started flying beautifully again. A problem can be staring you in the face sometimes but still you can't see it.
