Well, mine is covered with heat shrink with a round hole cut out above the heat sink. (about the size of a quarter) So I take it I don't need to do the mod then.

Finless - I sure wish I had found your vids before I started building my TRex. I was pulling my hair out trying to get it together. Align needs to work on their manuals.

You just haved to let him know if you want the clear stuff. You can also get it at any electronics supply place for real cheap.
The clear is really neat to have on there because you can see everything inside of your ESC.

Just got the TREX450s CF with the RCE-BL35X ESC.
Is this mod necessary on this model?
Thanks

Now adays it really isnt needed to do anymore... Back when we had low C batts etc the ESC ran hotter. Also the newest Align ESC has the heat sink under the heat shrink so you dont need to do it.

Yes but I think part of the idea of using the epoxy was to hold on the heat sink as there is no other method of securing the heat sink to the MOSFETs. Artic Silver is just thremal transfer paste and will not hold the heat sink on.

Artic makes a thremal Epoxy too...

I figured I would post this, in case others are like Me, and hard to get Thermal epoxy . I have used it on Align and Helimax ESC .

plus you can use it for your computer (chipset on motherboard).

you can order very easy from Newegg computer supply , very fast pretty cheap. used them for years. but you could get from other computer supply places.

here is the Premium one I use
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100005

there is the older version which is also good, I used that on one of my first ESC's a Align 25amp. still good.

Now to get someone to make us a Zeebender for the aluminum plate :)

anyway hope this Helps out, especially for People who have shipping issue in remote areas with no real electronic supply stores , like here on the Big island of Hawaii (sorry Bob, not that great to fly in your Contest, Sorry to Hear about Your Mom. ) Mahalo Nui Loa for all the Help You Give us.

sorry if it's been asked. I got through 13 pages and didn't see what I wanted to ask.

Why not just apply the heatsink to the mosfets directly?
Would they not cover the whole area? If not, you can scavange a slighly bigger heatsink out of common discarded electronics(think old PC's) and have alot better thermal conductivity. I'm a huge computer nerd. So I'm thinking about cpu overclocking etc.... Mosfets on motherboards have been an issue at times we've had to sink up. Anyway, I think modding with a bigger heatsink would bring temps down. Now to find a mod to get more POWER :)

The plate is a RF shield and needs to cover the SCR's too. With 2.4 radio systems you may be OK without the plate. Also the reason for the Z bend in the plate is because the SCR's sit higher than the MOSFETS so you wont be able to get a larger heatsink on both the SCRs and the Mosfets.

NOW this mod was made way back when pack C rating were much lower and thus the ESC ran hotter! No a day this mod is really not needed anymore. Also the newer Align 35X ESC they put the heat sink back under the heat shrink and on the MOSFETs like it should have been.

I have a Blade 400 anyway, but what can I say? I like to mod stuff heeh!
ideally, for those early models you could find a small 1 or 2u socket A/462 heatsink that might cover teh SCR's then, and have that same lip. Granted, the mod you have here works great, and well no real need to improve. I guess I'm always looking for something else to mod though ahha!
thx Finless. I'm new to the board and catching up on your FAQ and subforum here :O. WOW! GREAT INFO. Learned so much in 1hr today of watching vid's I would have taken months to understand. Thx and look forward to many NOOB questions from an eager learner. See what you've done to yourself ahha!
thx

That's a very ineffective EMI shield, imho....I'm glad you pointed that out...:)

Well Bob, they must have some old stock floating around still. I just bought a 35G from Hobbytown USA here, and the sink is taped to the outside of the shrink.....STUPID:thumbdown: Wish I'd seen this thread before I went looking, I'd have shopped around for a new style one. Jeff

Hmmmm, same story here in Lincoln, Ne. Got an SA kit from Hobby Town. I seen this thread than went back and all there ESC's are the old style. Hey Bob, you said that with the newer batteries this mod is now not needed? I just cut my shrink and heatsink off last night. With the newer batteries can I just now put the sink back on UNDER the shrink and be ok?

Yes... I havent seen anyone have heat up issues for a while now. Heat up problem were back when the best batts you could get were 15C.

Great. Thanks Bob. You have been a big help with all your vid's and stuf. Could have used it 6 years ago when I got my first heli.
