View Full Version : Ion-x 60T single gear and 12S
Hi!
Was out today to test the 1521-2.0 motor with a 45T gear and 12S Tronic battery. and on the first flight after 5 minutes with primarily hovering and slow forward flight, the motor self destroyed with some smoke before I hit the Throttle hold switch.
The bottom of the motor was separated from the rest of the motor, and the inside didn't look nice.
Thereafter I changed back to the 1521-1.5 motor, but this time with only a single 60T gear, just to test it, and it worked very well. Full pitch range, awesome power, and no visible wear on the gear after 3 flights........so no melted gear so far, only time will show how many cycles I will get with this setup, but if it works, this setup might be what I will use in the future.
Haven't tried the actro 32-3 motor on 12S in the Ion-X yet, know this motor is a very good performing motor too from the Joker-2 on 12S, and with a lower noise level compared to the high rpm NEU motors.

Another NEU with a blown off endcap... :arggg:
Got another 3 x 3D flights today with the 60T gear. 2000 RPM on the head, lots of power.....if I am lucky this single 60T gear might hold out for another 20-30 flights....time to order some more 60T gears.
With the same 12S Tronic battery and more or less the same power as on the Joker2, the NEU motor only reach a temperature of 80 deg. C where the Actro motor reaches 100 deg. C....It might have something to do with better cooling in the Ion-X, but of cause it is also two different motors, heliīs and escīs.
The battery on the Ion-X is also slightly cooler than on the Joker 2, and are for sure better cooled on the Ion-X compared to the Joker 2.
Sounds like the NEU motor have a good time when spinning around 48.000 rpm....this is not a high torque motor, but a high RPM motor, and should be used like that to get the best out of it I think.
I now have 13 flights and the 60T gear is still holding up very well.
This is my dream machine, wish I could show some video of it in action, so powerful, so precise and easy to control, and so smooth. 100% pure fun and pleasure.
12S and a NEU 1521-1.5Y is all you need, don't think anybody really need more power as this motor is rated for up to 2000 Watt constantly, and 3600W for 20 sec. Also it is rated for 50V and max. 60.000 rpm.
I have close to 50V on a fully charged battery, 48.000 rpm, and 1500 plus Watt in average for 7 minutes, and 3600 Watt available for 20 sec. at a time....I can harvest most of this potential power from the motor, and donīt really need more power than that as a stable rpm. between 1850 and 2000 during all maneuvers is all one can dream about.
The rotor rpm is very stable, cant bug it down with continuous tic-tocīs etc. it just continuous with high rotor rpm and some very sweet music from the stiff 690mm V-blades.
This sweet powertrain in combination with the Ion-X makes this to the best 90 size e-heli on the market right now I would dare to say....and I am happy now, as I don't need to search anymore to find the heli of my dreams. :D
Guess it will be hard for a 90 size nitro machine to outperform this Ion-X.
Will secure the bottom of the NEU motor with some epoxy glue, and then just hope everything will continue to work as good as it does right now.
Also I have ordered some app. 1.5 x thicker than standard 60T gears from Chris, think that is all it takes to make this gear have a long and happy life, even that I have seen no problems yet with the standard 60T gear.
I have already started to save money up for my next ion-X dream machine.
Got some new 60T stuff to check out from Chris.
As said I find the NEU 1521-1.5Y motor in combination with a 60T gear a perfect combination, so will continue with that setup until further.
The standard 60T gear holds up fine until now, but just in case, and also to check the difference, I ordered some thick 60T gears. These are not the V1 where it is two standard gears bolted together, as this thick gear is made of two thin 60T gears, as two standard 60T gears will be too thick.
PS. Thanks Will for not taking money for uploading original pictures. I like that :D

Thanks for the tlying report. Just out of curiosity, did you ahve the thick motor mount installed when the end cap came off your first NEU?

No I did not, and as well donīt have it installed yet with the 1.5Y motor...will be in place before next flight.
