View Full Version : odd flight characteristic

hey all,
so its been a while, but i actually have an odd thing happening to my hurri right now, so here goes. when i start flying, the first thing i do is to make sure it's all trimmed up and all that (yeah i know... duh). however, after flying for a while, and especially right after some harder maneuvers, i will notice my heli start to drift off forward and to the left, as if it's un-trimmed... the drift is actually fairly dramatic- not like it's falling out of the sky or anything but more like if i were to do like 5 or six clicks of forward and left trim.... the wierd thing however, is once i bring the heli back into "trimming" position (about 10 feet in front of me, tail in), it seems to be back in perfect trim. so, i'll go fly it again, do some stuff, and then i'll notice it starting to drift again. has anyone had this problem before??? i'm wondering if maybe the servos can't handle the load (ds821's) or maybe there's something up with the head?
also, today when i was flying, for a brief moment, it felt like there was a biiig delay when i tried a cyclic correction. it was like pushing right on cyclic and the heli didn't tilt, then when i tried again it did. it didnt do anything wierd after that however.
well, you're welcome for giving us something to mull over during the (too) long down-season (well except for those jerks jb and ben :P) speaking of jerks... haven't heard from those two in a while... maybe they're out comparing the size of their pink trucks or something

Maybe the CG changes as you "drain" the electrons out of the batteries.....:tongue

Yeh, still stuck in the land of no helis (not even pink trucks allowed here!) I did see a pretty girl the other day...musta been a tourist!.......some serious 'growlers here!!!
Still. Its been a good week so far...only two bombs and no shootings. I did my usual run to the office this morning (when I say 'run' I mean being driven in an aircon mini bus not jogging obviously!) people are 'frying' out there! Only got stopped by military 4 times (search bus, check documents, search bags, "where are you going, where did you come from, what are you doing here?". As this journey is only 15 minutes long this gets quite tiresome!
I wish I knew when I was gonna get some time off to fly home.....missing flying!!!

jb....remember that photo ages ago of you flying the pico underwater.,..imagine what your temp land lords would make of it.........clearly oJama Bin laden material...but how does he get the little flying bomb to go under .bobby check servos are tight in the rubbers, flybar and paddles are rock solid, electrons are draining evenly along batteries cog....

Yep, thats it. If you are running 2 3s packs you need to rotate one of them 180 degrees so that they discharge evenly.
BTW, I also have some nice ocean front property for sale here in Western Pa. if you are interested. The thunder snowstorms are a real treat.

bobbybe, grease and lube lately?
well, i've greaed and lubed but i haven't touched my heli... eyyooooo :smokin: actually tho no i haven't lubed my bearings or greased anything in a while, and on top of that i've never changed my dampeners and i've probly got 120+ flights on her. you know i'll have to balance my lipo on top of a needle and then drain the batteries by plugging it into the blowup sheep i borrowed from marco then i'll be able to determine just where the he// all of those darn electrons are going... i've noticed that alot of slop has developed in the head near the washout arms and it seems that the ball-links have a bit of wiggle room.... maybe i'll change all those out too and check that everything in the grips is tight while i'm at it. gonna have to wait till i have some time tho. let you all know
hang in there jb you'll be back to your pretty truck in no time! seriously tho, dodge those bombs and beware of women with short hair...
wait you guys aren't serious about the batteries are you??

good trick for tighter er......washouts.and actually anywhere you have screws going into plastic.the metal standoffs used on electronics to separate boards while earthing them.any electronics shop has them.alternatively if anyone else in your house has a computer simply wait till their asleep, then take a philips screwdriver and some pliers.......
drill threaded holes out in washout(works well where pitch/roll levers screw into plastic frames as well) making sure you drill them dead straight, then ca/epoxy the standoffs in there.gets rid of a hell of alot of slop....

who knows what Marco is talking about this time... I mean come on... using motherboard stand offs on a heli... but only after drilling the threads out.. no thinks.. I'd rather spend that time flying....

I'm sure you guys have heard of Heli-Coils before right? ( And no, Heli is not short for Helicopter ) You know, the kind you install to repair damaged threads. I think that is what Marco is talking about. If you have some loose threads, drill it out at the right diameter , then epoxy the little threaded standoffs from electronics boards in and you have new threads. At least I think that is what he said.:thinking

these suckers....
http://www.jaycar.co.nz/products_uploaded/product_1413.jpgthen you have metal threaded inserts instead of screwing into plastic...instant no more slop.well ok maybe 2 minutes
