View Full Version : Why does each Plane or Helo run on a different battery voltage?

Just getting started on planes and was hoping to use some of the batteries I already have plenty of.

Blade CX2 = 7.4 volts

Blade CP = 9.6 volts

Trex 450 = 11.1 volts

Will probably get the Firebird Freedom as anything that takes 11.1 volts (T-28 Trojan) will probable get destroyed in the first 10 minutes

Of course the Freedom Flyer needs 8.4 volts :thinking

What would happen if I ran 9.6 or even 11.1 in it?

Smoke the ESC, the motor or can we fudge a little?

Blade CP will run on 11.1 volts.

7.2 volts = 6 cell NiCd or NiMN
7.4 volts = 2 cell lipo
8.4 volts = 7 cell NiCd or NiMH
9.6 volts = 8 cell NiCd or NiMH
11.1 volts = 3 cell lipo
14.8 volts = 4 cell lipo

Most anything that runs on 9.6 will run on 11.1. At wosrt you might need the next size smaller prop.

I bought the AeroBird Swift, it's 8.4 volts says it can also use 9.6 which my Blade CP also uses.

Maybe I'll try 11.1 ....

8.4 to 11.1 is a BIG jump and may burn out the motor.

Also, you have to watch the max voltage rating of the ESC.

And if it's nihm that is factory wouldn't using a lipo be unsafe due to the dif in low voltage cut-off?

You would have to fly by timer.
