This was posted on my Gallery on RR and I pulled it out of a Google search Cache. I am posting it here for all to have.

Did your Align motor come apart?
NOTE: You do not need to do this mod if the motor has "silver" end caps!
The gold end caps are glued on but the silver ones screw on and the blue motor can is threaded!
Just pin the top and bottom ends to the can. Super easy to do.
Tired of your motor coming apart? After having two of my motors come apart even after gluing one myself, I decided a fix was in order. By the way, the reason my own glue job came apart the second time was because the top bearing failed!!!!!! I have a theory on why. I think the out of round main gear puts uneven loads on that top bearing which may cause it to fail early. So watch your mesh tolerances.... My opinion anyway.
OK, so here is the fix:
1) Drill two holes through the can and the top plate 180 apart (e.g. one on each side of the motor). The distance from the top of the can should be 1mm which will allow it to go through the "center" of the top plates flange. To low and you will miss the top plate flange.
2) Cut 2 pins from music wire the size of the hole you drilled. I used a 1/32nd drill bit and music wire. I cut the pins long so they would stick out and allow me to get on them with pliers should I want to remove them to service the bearings again.
3) Glue the top plate on (I used epoxy) and make sure the holes are aligned. Insert the pins being sure to go through the top plate hole but not to far as to stick into the motor enough to interfere with the motors fan blades. Glue the pins in place (I used epoxy).

I now use screws instead of pins!

Hey Bob. Glad to see you here.
I'm doing a new build on an SE. I'll do this mod as well as the 35g ESC mod before the first flight.
Question:
When you drill the four holes in the 430L, how do you keep metal particles from getting inside the motor and onto the armature and elsewhere? I have canned air to blow it all out afterwards, and although that should take care of the aluminum particles I'm concerned about steel particles from the can getting to places that the canned air won't blow clear.
Also, is there a trick to separating the ends from the can?
Thanks

It's all aluminum so dont worry there but I did HAND drill it and all the particles fell to the table and not inside the motor.

Is there a slick Finless Bob trick to removing the ends from the main can?

Is there a slick Finless Bob trick to removing the ends from the main can?
:D
BTW you know you dont have to do this fix to the silver end cap nmotors right?
As for a slick way yes I kind of do... screw bolts into the end cap to use hand "handles" to pull the end cap off. You can heat the blue can a little to loosen the locktite...

AHA! Didn't know that. It does have silver end caps. I had the drill in hand when I read this! Saved by the bell.
Thanks again.

Wow that was close! Yes the silver end cap motors the cap SCREWS on and the blue can is threaded so no worries about those coming apart!
I will update my sticky post to say that!

Does the 420L have this separating problem too?

Hey Eddie! Glad to see ya over here at the Freak!!!!!
I have NOT seen a Silver capped 420 yet... Would you like me to ask Align? I can find out if you like but I bet the answer is no...

Thanks Bob! Guess what... I can hover inverted now!!

COOL! Man I gotta see that! GOOD for you!
Yes I was also talking about the 420LF.. I do NOT think they have changed the design for that motor like they have for the 430L for the SE.
I bet it is not screwed on like the 430.....

Thank you sir!
So you're saying... the 420L is not screwed in, and therefore it is susceptible to separating, right?

Bob the screws you used on the end caps were they self tappers or machine screw?
Finless

They were self tappers.

Just a variation. I used setscrews and locktite. You need a tap though.
couldn't you just jbweld the end caps on instead of dealing with the shavings from drilling the holes?
Finless

The shavings from drilling holes is aluminum and thus wont try to stick to the magnets! Yes you could use JB weld but pinning will for sure keep it from coming apart!
bob
What do you think happened here?
4 month old silver 430L in rex with 325pro's ,PHX35 ,on 3s
happened in ID2 curve 100,85,100 about 2 min into flight
It tied a knot in the PHX35 , LOL
I thought the silver end bell 430L was the good one :dontknow
EDIT : Sorry Bob , I see you answered on the other thread, I'll go back to it

Bob,
I have the 420LF - blue can and gold caps. I screwed in the bolts on both sides and heated the can. I am pulling with all my might but can't get them off.
I bought it earlier this week. Do you think Align might have improved it?
The motor is new and unused. Do you suggest that I should just drill and use screws to secure it without fresh lock-tite, or that I fly it a few times and hope it comes apart easier later (hopefully not while airborne!)...

You dont have to take it apart to pin it so I would just pin it and be done with it.

There is a guy on RR who had the screw on cap unscrew and it looks like it was thread locked from the factory. Looks like probably you should pin them also. He did after it failed.
