Hi guys,
How does this gyro mount secure into the boom clamp? Are there some screws or is it glued with Shoe Goop? I saw one on a club member's heli and he said it was secured with a screw. I always thought it was glued.
Thanks.

There are many options to securing it. Here is an excerpt from my instructions...
There are 4 main approaches to mounting the Inverted Gyro Mount:
1) Glue the Inverted Gyro Mount in place. (SA, SE, XL & SuperFrame mounts)
Use Plumbers Goop to secure. Adhere to as many surfaces as possible to give the best grip. Avoid getting goop on the boom since you will want to adjust it periodically.
2) Screw it into the boom block through the bottom of the Inverted Gyro Mount. (SE mount only)
This method requires you to drill one hole through the boom block, and then tap the hole with a 3mm .50 pitch tap. Press the block into place and use it as a template to drill a #40 hole. Only drill through the first layer of metal which is only a few mm thick. Carefully tap the hole with a 3 mm .50 pitch tap. Use loctite on screw when installing. Make it snug but do not over tighten or you could break the bond between the inner block and the top block. You don’t want to strip the hole or damage the Inverted Gyro Mount.
I will drill the countersunk hole in the Inverted Gyro Mount and provide a 3mm stainless steel mounting screw if requested when ordering.
3) Screw into the Inverted Gyro Mount from both sides through the frame. (SE & SuperFrame mounts )
This method requires you drill a hole through your frames on each side. Screws will go through your frames into the small block on the Inverted Gyro Mount. Drill the frames first. Locate the new holes directly between the two existing holes. Use a bit that matches the other holes in the frame.
Press the mount into place, and then use the frame holes to drill smaller holes into the small block on the mount. Use a bit sized appropriately for your screws. Drill very slowly making sure to keep the drill perpendicular to the frame. Drill a separate hole for each side, rather than one hole clear through the block.
4) Stick on the Inverted Gyro Mount with double sided tape. (All mounts )
Use a thin 1/16”heavy duty double sided mounting tape like Scotch® Exterior Mounting Tape. Don’t use the 1/8” spongy type that comes with your gyro because it will make the gyro response a bit mushy.
Most people glue it with goop I think.

I was actaully just about to mount my GY401 on my Trex450s cf the other night when I realized it wouldent fit under the frame unless I sanded the frame slightly. Of corse I dident wanna ruin the frame at all so I recalled having some carbon fiber cloth, and resin left over from a previous project and decided to make a plate similar to the plexy glass plate everyone else has. It came out awesome if I say so myself used 5 sheets of carbon fiber and about 6oz of resin. Best part is it matches the frame, although no one will ever see it lol. Ill update pictures later. :D

Hi Rick...
Have you ever shipped to South Africa? Any idea on pricing if you have? Also, how much are your mounts for the SE?
thanx

Bob,
If the gyro is mounted upside down, how do you check the status of the gyro LED's?
(I am using 401 gyro on 450 SA).
Thanks,
Kam

So, I wanted to move my gyro off the top of the boom. I have the PHEONIX 450, also known as the GL 450C metal boom holder, and the way the screws are setup, I cant just flip it upside down. So I noticed some people had it inside the heli, below the main gear. But its really close to the motor, and even closer to the motor wires.... is this gonna be a problem?
And if so, what symptoms would I expect? Just wag... or crazy erratic tail movement?

Some people get by with it there others do not.... I thiunk more the latter sice you dont see too many set up that way.

hmmm... a little scary to even take off like that. Dawm... more not huh? Well, that a vote against....
It seems that the glue on plastic thingy for $17 is little pricey for what it is... and how well does it hold... I can get a piece of plastic cut to that size for about 1.50, is that the most popular method? Or should I just buy an align tail case and flip that upside down, its not much more! The GL450 tail holder doesnt use spacers like the align one, so it needs long screws, and it makes it impossible to invert it for one of the screws that needs to lineup with the flame... oh well. Do you think I should worry about even giving this a try... or is it gonna be unpredictable ?

Trireme get one of RDLORH's mounts. It's not just a piece of "plastic thingy" and works 100%. Don't make it complicated or overthink the problem.

Actually its 16.50 shipped to your door and I guaranty it to be a perfect fit and that it will never come apart. Tack it on an order at Ready Heli or Modefos and its $14.
Whether you buy my mount or not, make sure you do something to protect your gyro. I hate to see you out $140.
Good luck!

What does it stick to?? I am not sure how different this boom holder is... but on mine, I can see the boom from the bottom, so there isnt much to attach the holder too, other then sticking it to the boom itself.... Is this what yours looks like?
EDIT: I tried flying with the gyro near the motor, I got alot of wag, and it would come and go, no good. So I guess I will order one of these mounts, do you think it will work with my boom holder?
THANKS!

Well, I guess I have answered my own question, I found some high quality pics of the Align boom holder.... I am sh@#$#@T out of luck... as you can see above, my holder doesnt have meet the edge of the boom.... so the 3M tape wont hold well....
That being said, I know I am dealing with the woes of buying imitation, so I am sorry to bug you guys with my isolated problem, but do you think rdlohrs mount will work with the shoe goo??
thanks! Really appreciate it!

I understand your concern. I felt the same way when I got my bird. Thats what lead me to come up with the mount design. I personally have the SE V1 and am still using the first mount I ever made. My mount is pretty much the standard for that bird now. Here are some mounting options:
There are 4 main approaches to mounting the Inverted Gyro Mount:
1) Glue the Inverted Gyro Mount in place. (SA, SE, XL & SuperFrame mounts)

Whatever method you choose, be very careful that all is secure. A safety strap of some kind is recommended for added security. Losing a gyro mid flight will make for a very challenging landing and could be dangerous!

I think the only thing I would have to glue to, is the boom.... So might need an align boom holder, and your mod....

Nope. Lots of people have bought these. You just goop it to the boom block. The boom can be seen between the two bottom halves of the boom block.
I personally screw mine to the boom block.

So did you drill holes into your boom block? Any fancy tools needed for that? Or will a dremel do it?

I used shoe goo (rubber sement) and a strap for safety.

To screw it into the boom block, see option 2 above. You need a drill bit and tap. Thats why most people goop it as Bob says. Bob was the first to goop his on and his has been holding since Feb of 2006.

I went with the Shoe Goo, after a few tests with similiar materials, I found that the Shoe Goo (advanced formula), it is impressively strong. I used a 20mmx35mm piece of 3/16 acrylic, cut it like glass, by scoring it with a blade, and then snapping it on the end of a table. Works beautifully. The sheet of plastic was .44c, and the shoe goo was $4.99. I added a small amount of goo, with a toothpick, in a stripe along the front and back of the block, so I really didnt use much at all, but it seems very tightly attached.
I really love it cause now i can see the status of the gyro while the heli is over head. This is a great mod. Thanks for all your guidance.
O, and a quicknote, I had to reverse my gyro before flight.

Coiling your AR6000 antennae like that could be a very bad idea  Of course if it reduces the range to 10% of normal you will be down to around 500ft so probably still OK for a little heli but I wouldn't do it myself. If it still range checks OK from all orientations around the heli then I guess you are good to go.
