OK I am creating this post here because I am getting PM'ed a lot for where to get the gyro mounting plates.
This was a huge thread on RR (gyro on top=bad) about whacked gyro's and all of that info got deleted. I that post for how to mount the gyro under the boom on the SE Carbon frames. It entailed grinding the frames which a lot of people didnt want to do. Rick made these reverse gyro mounting plates instead of grinding the frames!
People are coming over to the Freak from RR trying to find the plates Rick makes so I am going to create this post so they know where to go.
Below are pictures of the different gyro mounting plates if this is what your looking for.
You can get them at http://www.Readyheli.com or you can get them directly from Rick. Rick's web site is here: http://clearly.wavelandps.com
And you can also PM here on the Freak. His user name is rdlohr
My intention of making this post is not as an advertisement and trust me Rick wont be getting rich off these! Just putting this up so people can find that LOST information about these plates.

Thanks Bob. This will help people out. I've had a bunch of people searching around because of the deleted posts over at RR.
You are right on the "not getting rich" part, but I am having a lot of fun helping people out!

I've just finished the build of my SE and didn't realise that top mounting was an issue :arggg:
I assume that you can get a blade strike, but given that I'm getting back into helis and won;t be doing much more than hovering practise and lazy 8's for a while do I really need to move it? Just spent a few hours braiding up the installation and can't face doing it again :(

an ounce of prevention…
it's not just high g moves that will boom strike. you could dump it. then you go from a $20 repair to a $150 repair....and you get to loom it all up again anyway.

I'd like to say don't worry about it, but I had a guy tell me he did the same thing thinking he was just hovering so he didn't think he was at much risk. It somehow hit just wrong and destroyed his gyro. He was cursing.

I keep reading about a Walt's mount...is that it?

No, walts mount goes inside. Mine allows you to mount under the boom.
Check modefos. I think they have them.

Why cant we just mount the Gyro on top of the reciever in the back of the heli where the receiver goes? Would it cause interference? If you use an electron 6 rec. you can mount it upside down on the SE in the back of the frame and then double side tape the Gyro to the receiver. Its a nice flat surface.

I don't think there would be interference. You could try it and see. I try to keep my components seperated a bit, but I bet it would be OK. The main problem I see is that it will not be easy to make adjustments to the gyro settings. Give it a shot. If you decide to buy a gyro mount, give me a shout.
Good Luck

Go with Ricks mount and you won't be sorry :noteworthy . It fits like a glove and still gives access to everthing. It is the KISS (keep it simple s...) principle in action. Glad I have mine!!

Thanks Ralph, I never thought of it quite like that, but the KISS line is one of my favorites at work. People always want to complicate simple things and I'm always reeling them in.

I assume setting up the gyro is different when its upside down?

Yep, just switch the direction switch the opposite way

No problem, I have the SE version too.
So for the normal XL CDE, where is the best place for Gyro?
Many thanks

UNDER THE BOOM on ALL Trex models!
Rick sells one for the XL CDE or HDE as they are the same. The SE version is different.

Thanks Bob, you are the best, with out your videos, beginners like me will not even dream of having them setup properly.

In keeping with the KISS theory, Am I missing something?
Why cant you just install the boom mounting block upside down so that the flat gyro mounting surface is facing down?
Yes the Align logo will be upside down on both the blocks and the boom, big deal.
The SE does not use the keying hole in the back of the boom so there is no issue there.
I always mount my gyros using the thick Zeal green snot mounting tape which is just thick enough to get the gyro past the side frames with no grinding.
No picking on my wiring, I'm still building.
I will still add a Velcro strap around the gyro for safety.
