View Full Version : Head Speed / Aerobatics instruction video

OK I guess I am better and making technical instructional videos than flying instruction videos
Here is my first attempt and a unscripted attempt at a flight training video..... Obviously I need to polish my video skills and really do some scripting before attempting this again.
BUT with all the chatter about head speed and bobbling issues (and Rick's first roll :) ), I decided to post this video anyway. Of note is the beginning where we talk about head speed, bobbling, etc and hopefully this video will show new people what a 3D head speed should sound like.
Opinions please?

Dont say sweet until you see it..... not up to what I consider quality :(
It was an experiment for me but since I always like to share you got it....

Well I see what you mean but I still say sweet because you are working on it. That is just what I need right now. Yea a little hard to hear both voices at the same level and it was hard to hear the rpm of the head.

Bob,
Flyin’ tutor videos are an excellent idea. Great job on the first of what I hope to be many! I agree with you a script would help with the flow, another thing you many want to consider is the background. Find something that makes the heli easy to see.
Thanks again & please keep up the great work.

The page is loading fine for me now, must have been a temporary problem. Thanks for the video Bob, I don't own a heli yet but your videos have been a great way for me to figure out what I'm going to order when the time comes!
Any chance you can do a comparison video for different transmitters? Right now that's the only thing I haven't got figured out...

Bob:
I like the video. Need to keep the focus better, and I would like to actually see the sticks on the transmitter go while doing the maneauver.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks,

Hey Bob,
I'm a new Trex pilot (only 12 flights so far) so I think I'm a good target audience for your videos. I've viewed all your setup videos and find them extremely helpful. (Thanks!)
I realize that these live-flight videos are a work in progress however I don't think they will be that effective as a flight training tool (i.e., how to autorotate, how to do a loop, etc).
I think your simulator videos are better from the point of view of training as you can see the sticks move easily and the audio level is constant, which facilitates a running commentary. Doing a live flight running commentary, even one that is rehearsed is very difficult. It is very hard to keep the audio levels even and you will always have environmental noise to deal with. Most folks do that in-studio post editing.
Here's an example of live-flight video instruction. I actually have this DVD and it is quite good.
http://www.jpmediainc.net/heli.html. There is a video sample on the page.
I think the areas where the live video would be helpful is illustrating what some the Trex should look/sound like when doing something specific. You touched on it briefly in your video when you demonstrated the sound of a good 3D head speed.
For example, I would like to know what does bogging look/sound like?
Another one: flying in gusting wind, I know the TREX will bob up and down but I've never experienced it so it would be cool to be able to see it and recognize what was going on.
Just my two cents.
Thank you so much for your support to the Heli community at large!

Good Idea. I think a shot of the stick movment and More planing will help. not to mention a mic on the pilot. I think with work this could be a great tool. Keep up the good work. :noteworthy If your vids hadn't ben out there I whould have given up on flying helis. Now that I know how to set them up, I can fly and recover from a crash too. Thanks bob. :fly :happyd :clappp

The higher head speed is idle up.
Watch my flying video as I think you can hear the head speed change better just after lifting inot the hover

Hello Bob,
Nice video, I like it and I will give you my opinion:
1)The pilot need his own mic so we can listen to him better. Maybe you can add some type of front cover to the mics so the wind noice dont bother.
2)Could it be possible that you make something like a split screen video so we can see at the same time in haft part of the screen the heli flying and in the other haft we see the sticks on the transmitter while the pilot do the maneauver? I am pretty sure you will need 2 cameras and then editing.
3)Also, when you say someting like the pitch degrees, RPM, etc, can you put that numbers at the same type on the screen like subtitles.
4)Focus
Thanks and keep the good work,
Isaac

I liked the vid it shows me that my Trex setup is right on. :TN says THANKS
Hi Finless,
I've seen your videos and work on several aspects of helis, and have learned quite abit, I'm wondering about what you said about ball links on the T-Rex600 build vidz, and how the "A" should always be to the outside.
Does this mean that the linkages can only be adjusted one whole turn at a minimum, what if a half turn is all that is needed?
Also on the ESC for the T-Rex600, have you or anybody tried setting it to high timing, or is this an absolute don't do for this setup?
Thanks for the knowledge.

totally helpful. I am still no where near this level, but going into this hobbie blind as it were, its hard to understand what people are talking about without visualizing it.
