hey all, so here's a message for everyone- beware of dogs! i was flying my hurri today where i always go, and there's this guy who normally uses the field to practice fly-fishing. when he is doing his thing, i patiently wait, and vice versa. so anyways, i was just about to start my second pack up when he showed up and sat outside his car. i flew around for a bit while he watched and then, out of the fogs of hell, came 2 suv's, each containing one soccer mom and many more dogs. well, instead of waiting like this guy, they barge out into the field and the dogs start running about like cracked out squirrels. well, at the time that i saw them i was inverted (again) nose kinda in... more like 45 degrees out, and about 5 ft up. well, as soon as i saw the dogs, one starts wandering over so i immediately spun the heli around and landed it hard. so hard, in fact, that the tail struck the ground and the stabalizer and blades snapped. well, i went over to get my heli and these ladies were just chatting like nothing happened. i went to clean the dirt off of my tail (fortunately no major damage) and i said to the guy "thanks alot for waiting that was very considerate of you" right in front of these clueless soccer moms who probably didn't even understand the jibe. at that point they and their dogs just walked over to the other field (that was completely empty)
aaaagh i need to just pay the 270 and get my year long membership at the local club

Well that really sucks Bobby. People are really inconsiderate nowadays. Too bad you don't have strict 'leash laws' like we have here. If that happened to me here I would have pulled out the cell phone and called the dog warden. He would have been there in less than 10 min., hauled the dogs to a holding shelter and fined those woman $500 each. Plus they would have to pay the shelter to get their dogs back.
I know this cause one day my beagle somehow got out of his pen and I couldn't find him. About 30min. later the dog warden was at my front door with my dog in the back of his truck and a $500 fine in his hand.

Again people.. this is why you do not fly in public parks or public land.
it is a accident waiting to happen that will be blamed on RC not the dog walkers.
Find a club or some private property that is protected.
550 in the park is not a good idea at all that heli is large enough to kill someone.

I fly at a Forest Preserve public flying field. There are several large signs clearly stating "Model helicopter flying field". To the rest of the general public this seems to translate to "walk your dogs here".
What annoys me is that you have to have a permit from the Forest Preserve District to fly at their fields. When I'm paying to fly there I should not have to wait for some inconsiderate dog walker to leave.

In your case then you need to have the club talk to the county or whomever enforces that area,
make them educate the people that are there.
Here all our County/State/City Flying fields are enforced very strictly and the dog walkers can be cited for trespassing. and all these areas are fenced off and require an AMA to even get in the gate.

I wish places like that existed where I live on Long Island, NY. City / state flying fields would be sweet. Heck, I'd be happy to find a decent club. Haven't really looked though. I found a few online in my area and they don't seem to be too heli friendly. Or outsider friendly for that matter.

Even in an actual flying field, people are still stupid enough to go through the circuits. The Apollo field in the Sepulvida Basin here in SoCal is a huge field and fenced off for the most part, but joggers and bikers still go through the flying area. Saw a guy last year go into the circles with his motorcycle while a 600N was right there...forced the pilot to auto and got a mouthful from us. It's stupid people like that that add unnecessary danger to this hobby. Even last week people just casually walked through the flight zones to bypass the paths. It's ridiculous.

again comes down to who is responsible for enforcement. if the area is a flight field and fenced off they are the tresspassers. someone needs to say something or get the city/county involved.. we have the facts on our side.. our machines can kill someone that trespasses.. that should be enough ammo to get them to enforce it.
Took 1 death down here in Houston for the Law Enforcement and the clubs to take the danger seriously..

I'd say stop taking your cupcake snacks to the field. You know the effect cupcakes have on dogs. :rolling
Sorry for your troubles, man...keep your head up!

yeah this isn't even a park it's a deserted soccer field. there is a leash law but people don't seem to follow it and i never fly when there are people there (there actually is a dog park about 400 yards behind it around the corner). what happened here was these people pulled up in the parking lot and just let their dogs run out into the field. the parking lot is behind a bunch of trees and is about 50 yards behind the flight path where i fly. the whole thing is surrounded by trees so there's no way people can get in from the other three sides. police will even come and watch me fly on their lunch breaks so it's not a legality thing and i'd say it's actually pretty safe... well that is until a dog wanders in (like i said there is a leash law). i would never fly this thing where there are people around
marco- here's the vid where i got that from... check it out it's funny as hell
