What brand and size starter is being used for 90 size helis? I've been flying electric and have moved to nitro.

I have a sullivan with 2 3000 mah 7 cell NiMh. They are a little more expensive but it will last forever and plenty of torque.

Thanks for the great replies. I think I'll go with the Makita adapter at 18V. Jim

Consider the Makita 1.5Ah pack instead of the 3.0Ah pack that he shows on the website. It's interchangeable with the big one but is half the weight and supplies plenty of current. I don't recharge mine for several flying sessions. Truthfully, I've never had it run down so I don't know how many starts it would actually provide. Lots...

hello guys, I have problems starting my os 91 hz ps. This is what happens. The engine before it starts with the starter is full of fuel and I do not know why. Yet when I close the supply pipe at the entrance of fuel carburetor. Even when I finished flying and try to put it in motion I have always been the engine full of fuel and power and the starter motor does not start. As I mention this? the link are right I think, also enclosed photos.
Let me know, Thanks
I was at IRCHA in 08 and seen several of these with a couple of 2S lipo's straped to them and they kicked A** on the 90's.
I have one now, but I already had another brand set up for the 700.

A Hobbico 180 with 4S lipo 2200 lipo will start even a brand new, never ran 90. Here is my setup.

Torquemaster 180, 3S 2100 LiPo, never hesitates on starting a 90 heli :)
I may consider switch back to 3s 2100. My 4s with TorqueMaster 180 have so much power that if the engine is flooded, it will almost always unscrew the clutch nut!! :arggg:

Man, you guys have some SERIOUS starters. I'm just using a cheap-o Tower Hobbies 12V starter (the yellow one) with two 7 cell 3300mah NIMH packs. Doesn't seem to give me any problems even if an engine is brand new.

Hi all I have been thinking of using lipos on my starter it will take 12 to 24 volts, at the moment I use 2 12volt battries = 24 volts for starting 700 if i used a 5 cell lipo pack what amp. values should I use

Gosh it seems ppl like spending (wasting? :P) money on over the top starters. Call me differnt but I've just got an inexpensive Black & Decker Cordless Drill (cost me 45AUD but they go for 130$ in shops.. got a good deal) and it starts the lot! Previously to this i used a much smaller cordless drill that did the same job fine (but it was Dad's so i got a dedicated one to stop pinching his!). :)
Tried a 9.6v drill once and it's sort of hit-n-miss on 50 sized heli. It sometime work, other time, it just didn't have enough toqure and/or speed to get engine fire up. For 90 sized, it's as if the drill wasn't even on. :arggg::arggg:
You may think others are spending a lot money on starter, Hobbico 180 start is actually pretty cheap, $40 and it will start all motor up to 90 size each and every time.
For use that also fly electric, lipo pack is simply recycled tired old pack.

Let's face it. If I accept your argument (paying for more than I need), then the whole hobby is a waste. ;)

That, and after numerous times packing the car, traveling, setting up, and then have a starter that won't work........anything to eliminate failure. No problems anymore

Its possible to fly a Blade 400, but i wouldnt say its a waste to fly a .90 instead:lol:
