Hi KJ and TJ,
Great pics!! congrats on getting her over your head. Now you can work on flying three mistakes high
I noticed you both are 'pinchers' rather that 'thumb' flyers. What radio strap/tray are you guys using?? I'm, currently, a left pincher and right thumber  Mostly becasue I still have my right hand wrapped around the tx.
Cheers,
Leslie

Doesn't pinching lessen the response abilities?

Hey Leslie,
If you could have seen her expressions-- well they were priceless...
Yeah we are both pinchers-- The tray we both fly with I CNC machined at work. My co-worker (AV8TOR) measured and drew it up in SolidWorks. He made one and I just had to have one too. I am just learning SolidWorks, but he is a master at it.. Anyways thats what her and I fly with and love it... :smokin:

Hey Robin.............I think I have better response with pinching..............I started out with the thumb action but I wasn't being able to keep the small movements that were needed on my elevator and aileron so I started to pinch and liked it...........sometimes I will use just my thumb for moving my tail rutter so that I don't effect my pitch.........but I'm still poised with that pinching action.

Pinch vs. Thumb...one of the greatest arguments going...
It's really just a matter of preference. Ford vs. Chevy
I began using thumbs and have always done better with that method. I like being able to get to the "extremes" alot quicker for bail outs. Sometimes for precision flying, or on the simulator, I'll practice with the pinch grip, but I've never had the guts to use it during a 3D maneuver on the real bird!

Great pics. It is hard to get back on after a major crash. Good for you guys, it is GREAT to see a couple flying together. I am working on getting Robin flying myself!!
Thanks for sharing!!

Pinch vs. Thumb...one of the greatest arguments going...
JR
I guess I fly a hybrid of the two...forefinger and thumb unless I need quick full deflection, then the thumbs react by themselves. :D
Pics make the forum come to life! Thanks for sharing! :D

Hi All,
I guess I'm a hybid also, I use the pinch on the left stick and thumb on the right. I guess Whirly-Girl is right. It's was works for you and is comfortable.
I'd love to see a close up shot of those radio trays, that kj and tj are using. I'm intriqued
Cheers

that is a really good idea to do! I myself tried to pinch, and didn't like it. But good for you!!

I'm all thumbs, I tried pinch and it was not good for me.
This is a personal preference thing. Do what feels right to you.

Since I use a tray I'm a pincher. When I don't have the tray I just use thumbs but I tone my flying down since I don't have the same confidence with just thumbs.
It's all in what you get comfortable with. When I first started flying helis I was in a sling for 8 weeks from rotator cuff surgeryand could barely hold a transmitter. I think that's where I got hooked on the tray.

Hi, kjfly nice training gear. does anyone know where i can get the same training gear? I never used one with my t-rex but i like how it looks compared to the yellow traing gears they sell on ebay.

mhouse974,
I made that particular set of training gear from carbon tube and a center piece I CNC machined at work. I don't believe I have seen any like it commercially.

That's spiffy TJ. I didn't notice that until you just mentioned it. My training gear was just dowl rod criss-crossed and I just dealt with the "wobble" of one being on top of the other...but I didn't notice it too much with a .30-sized sitting on it. On a T-Rex, yours would be SWEET!

Hey Whirly-Girl,
They actually worked out well. The best part is, I made a set for the wife's new Swift also--but she tried flying it without training gear at IRCHA and has decided to leave them off the swift for good--Yeah kjfly :noteworthy
Now she is going to try the trex without them as well. I know she can do it. after all-- whats that saying,,, hmmmm oh yeah,, I am woman hear me roar...
All I can say is she is truly having a ball with her new Heli's-- yes plural.. And to think I only have one.. What is wrong with this Picture....

Cool! I started off flying pinch, thumb and index finger on the sticks with the rest of my hand kinda wrapped around the TX with my ring finger between the idle up and t-hold switches on my TX. I then started flying thumb and it was better for 3D and "Stick banging" but now I have converted back to pinch as it makes my 3D more precise and thats how I like it. It really depends on how I wanna fly at the moment. If I wanna throw it around ill use thumbs but if I wanna be precise ill pinch.

I started flying planks and was a thumb flyer exclusively. Along the way I realized that there are certain stick positions that your thumb alone has a hard time getting to and maintaining. Thumbs were only meant to bend in certain directions with any precision. The fact is there just aren't the right muscle groups for certain movements (for instance slight right roll with slightly more back elevator). By adding a finger to reinforce those movements, you can reach and hold spots with precision that you will have a difficult time holding with thumbs alone.
Durring my second year of flying I spent the winter flying the sim with a pinch grip. It took me about a week of flying the real thing after that to convert from thumbs to a pinch grip and I'll never look back.
The people who say you can't move as fast with a pinch grip are thumb flyers and just uncomfortable with a pinch. I assure you that you can move every bit as fast with a pinch grip and will gain endless amounts of control in the process. Not to mention that nerves will play a much lesser part in your flying.
Just my POV having flown (and still capable of flying) both ways,
Malorie

I love the tray's the hubby mechanic made - I have tried to thumb it but I am just more confident when I pinch. So the trays are perfect.
