I'm originally from upstate NY. Went to college in Troy and Rochester. I'd love to visit for the weekend, but I'm already committed to other things, not the least of which is my wedding anniversary!

I hope you all have a great time!

Looks like I'm hitching a ride with Ray and Kyle Stacy for Saturday!
Weather looks perfect.
Wish we could stay for the night flying (my fav!), but Sunday plans aren't allowing it.

We were planning for Saturday, but looking at the forcast I'm wondering if Sunday may be the better plan...

Thanks all you guys for the hospitality shown to Copterklutz and I as noobs!.

We went hoping to see a few guys fly the way we hope to fly some day. We came home realizing once again that this hobby is great not only because of the helis, but because of the quality of the people involved.

We showed up early afternoon Saturday in time to see Kyle Stacy show off his incredible skills. He is amazing. Fours years of helis and 2 hours of sim time a day mixed with the right upbringing and lots of raw talent make for quite a pilot at 12 years old.

As he finished, I guess Ray Stacy noticed our jaws dropped, because he and Kyle walked over and greeted Copterklutz and I right afterward. Ray is a great dad and a good guy to boot. I asked him if Kyle could possibly give my heli a try, since my 3D skills are limited and I wasn’t sure if my heli was up to it. Ray graciously agreed and took the next half hour going over my heli. Thanks to the Finless Videos, and Finless himself, he said my SE was in really good shape. We did up the speed a bit, widen the pitch range, and move in the flybar weights, but those were all things that make sense when moving from how I had it set up for advanced hover to more 3D capable settings.

Ray noticed a bit of vibration in the tail, but we decided to take it up anyhow since there was no quick fix apparent. I can see how Kyle ended up as good as he is watching Ray and the effortless way he was able to guide my heli lightly between rolls, inverted hovers, and other stunts as easily as I hover.

Well that was fun but now things got interesting. My SEs tail kicked out, at first slowly, then faster in an instant. Ray quickly hit throttle hold and set her down, but there was no avoiding a crash landing. I thought maybe the belt had broken, but it turned out the tail hub had exploded as I have read about so many times. Both grips ripped off with the screws sheared (even with the hardened black versions). Where the grips had gone, we figured we would never know.

Ray felt terrible since he was at the controls, but I quickly assured him not to worry a bit since crashing to me is an expected part of the hobby. Besides, there was nothing he did wrong, it would have done it to me soon, and probably with worse consequences.

I thought my heli was done for the day, but Ray pointed down to the “RC Hobbies and More” tent where I should be able to find any parts I needed. So Copterklutz and I headed down to get some parts. To make a long story short, LearnToFly, Steve and Erwin were there to help us out, and they allowed me to use their tent and table to do my rebuild.

I ended up with a new hub, grips, tail blade, main blades, boom, boom supports and some gyro mounting tape. (thanks to the guy who donated the tape whose name I didn’t catch) Erwin took good care of me on price, and we made good friends with these guys in the process. It took me about two hours, but my bird came out in one piece. I had bent my nice new gold covered Finless horizontal fin, but was able to bend it back.

About this time Ray came by and we decided to give “him another chance to crash it”, as he put it. This time it flew perfectly. We also got Kyle to take it for a spin. I no longer can ever use my bird as an excuse for anything because in the hands of pros, my TREX SE is a sweetheart! Someone even found my grips and tail blades intact, so now I have a set of spares.

We stayed the rest of the evening and watched many talented flyers. It’s going to be tough for Copterklutz and I to go back to our field and be content with figure 8s and barrel rolls now. Our standards have instantly moved up. I have a feeling my wallet is going to suffer in many ways too because the TREX seems mighty small now that I have watched Rapter and Vibe 90s for a day. Also, the scale models Stan and other were flying were quite impressive.

To top the evening off, we were treated to some 3D night flying that was really something to see. Stan evening took his scale Bell up for a spin and gave us quite a show.

In conclusion, I just want to thank the Flying Deuces and everyone who came to the show and made it such a treat for us new guys! Sorry this was so long winded, but we had a great time and I wanted to share it.

Can’t wait till next year!

Nice review, rdlohr!
I forgot to look for you, but met Learntofly (you ever gonna change your name to "learnedtofly"?) and a bunch of other cool folk. Just keep pushing, and the skills will come!

The weather man is ALWAYS wrong

This is an understatement... Saturday was PERFECT! I burned through a gallon on the 50's, plus a Trex flight. Sorry to miss the night stuff, but we were truely exhausted and had a 3.5hr drive home. Had a great time! Ray even commented that it was more fun than IRCHA!

Hope you guys can make it up to our Rochester show the end of August!

Great to meet you all. Rick, Copterklutz...friends for life? :D Sounds good to me, I will come up to fly any time. :glasses2: I learn so much every time I go to an event. Did my first stall turn, and first piro stall turn...plus I had it ripping as fast as I have ever gone, and I had great control of it for once. I think I know how to fly...I just need to grow some cahones!!!! Having others around to push you is a great thing. I really really need to find a "cool" bunch of guys in my area. The Flying Dueces are a great bunch of guys, worth the trip every time. Stephen Fox put my Tiger50 through the paces, man this kids is GOOD total control 14 years old!!!! :glasses2: Sorry Clyde but he says he wants a 611 now. I wish I got more flights in, I figured out what was wrong with my Evo on the way home, it helps to put the nut on the motor!!! :? DOH!!!

Rochester is a FOR SURE!!! Buddy box time with CY? NICE!!! I will be glued to my sim for the next month to try and advance my skills. Last year at Roch. Ray convinced me to take off my training gear, and was way to nervous to fly. Maybe this year I will be able to hover inverted!!!

Great to meet you all. This is a great hobby with great people.

"friends for life?"

No problem here......Mapquest says you're 2 hours away. That settles it. We're coming down to fly your evo. (After I warm up with my birds).

I was impressed with the Flying Dueces' hospitality and how nice their field is.
Also, the Stacy's are great...warm friendly and genuine. Jeff, let Rick and I know what your schedule looks like. We want to crash - er I mean fly at your field...
