Ive had 3 Rudder servo's burn themselves out...
the original DS420
a Hitec HS65MG
a Futaba S3157

I get about 2-3 batteries then the tail goes and I find the servo is hot with a nice smell of burning electonics, the ESC also gets hot as well.

Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

What volatage do you have your ESC set to?

Some people have been reporting the ESC's BEC is failing when running @ 6v. Personally I've not had any problems ( yet ) but it does seem to keep croping up that the BEC isn't that good?!

yes its running at factory default 6 volts, Ive wondered this, but the place I bought it from assures me this is fine.

I run mine @ 6v and I'm using an S9257 on the tail.

Perhaps you could try lowering the volatage, to say 5.5v and give that a try? This was you will eliminate any problems as such, but obviously going to be frustrating and costly if you burn out another tail servo.

Jasmine who posts on here had a problem with her ESC and changed to a CC Phx 25a ESC and external BEC I think?

Perhaps Jasmine could pop into the post and give some advice, as I mentioned I've not had a problem... But seems something that is cropping up on a few forums.

wouldn't a small external BEC fit the bill? I have one on mine for $7.

also I've seen a lot of pros flying perfectly fine with the stock ESC. which makes me wonder why i'm using an extra BEC. question is if they're running on 6V.

put a 9257 or 3500g in it, put esc to 5.5(which is same bert runs so I am sure it is fine) and run it and forget it.

why would the bec be at fault? He is only blowing T/R servos. I would check for binding in your tail, and possibly your gyro is setup with the wrong pulse setting. Also make sure you are not going all the way to the extremes with the pitch slider.

Are you using the Align gyro? Do you have the first setting correct. The one that changes it from the "normal" digital to the " high frame rate digital". If you have that wrong it will burn a servo up.

+1

Need to stop presuming and missing out major facotrs that could be another added problem.

My stock Align tail servo just died after about 15 flights. I have the gyro set for digital pulse. I've been fighting with the tail kicking out problem like most so I'm sure that didn't help matters. 15 flights @ 8 minutes a flight = 120 minutes TOTAL FLIGHT TIME:BSS While I'm whining, I have trouble with the power cutting off and on early in flight. Sometimes after only a minute or so. Does it with all 3 of my battery packs. Replaced the ESC, didn't help. I noticed while trying to do the ESC set up, that the gyro would inermittantly blink as if losing power and maybe a servo or 2 would jump. Notice I underlined trying. This new ESC won't let me enter the set up mode to lower the low battery cutoff voltage :arggg: I was hoping that would cure the power dropping. The TREX 250 was a fun kit and what SEEMED to be a beautifully designed heli until I tried to fly it. Oh, did I mention that I tried the Microheli tail assembly hoping to fix the tail problem? Don't waste your money. It has it's own binding issues and the opening for the belt is too small and frays your belt immediately. I am just about done with my first and only attempt at electrics. Keep your eye on EBAY for my 250 assuming it doesn't go in the dumpster first. I'll stick with my nitro Raptors. ALIGN :kiss

yes it is the Align gyro and setup the same as the shop owners 250, same with the radio and gain, set them up the same.

my problem now is Im out of work with funds slowly dribbling away with the heli, sofar its cost me an extra £80 with travelling and replacement parts.

thank you all for your advice Ill have to think about my next plan of action.

thats a large servo, dosnt it make the heli tail heavy?

Run the ESC @5.5V.
There is a sticker on my brand new T-Rex 250 super combo:
"Align ESC Note.
T-Rex 250 ESC - When using Align DS410/420 servos do NOT use more than 5.5V BEC output from the ESC."

It is a large servo for the 250 but it locks the tail in so well, quite a few of the 3Ders use them or 3500Gs.

It does make the tail slightly heavier but you can do little mods and bits to give it a better balance, moving electrics electrics up front, adding a small wieght etc - I found that the Thunder Power ProLite 3S 1320mah packs are perfect to balance it out.
