View Full Version : Tempest 3D clutchbell hot after flights

I have a tempest 3D with a YS 91 and 8.45 gear ratio. It is fairly new with only about 2 gallons through it. I have noticed that after a flight, the clutch bell is hot (about 175 deg.). The clutch also seem hot, but nothing else around it is (it is much warmer than the fan and the front end of the engine for instance).

Is this normal for a fury, or should I be looking for something wrong? Has anyone else noticed this or had a similar problem?

Thanks,

DK

DK,

Kind of depends on what kind of flying you are doing. Lots of autos or lots of landings with subsequent takeoffs will heat up a clutch quite a bit, but of course so will a slipping clutch. I've never actually used a temp gun on my clutch bells but I will tomorrow.

Hi DK,

Boy I have never grabbed the clutch bell after a flight. I would think you have a problem. Is the pinion and bearing blocks hot or just the clutch bell? With out seeing it I would think your clutch is slipping or the liner has come loose and is slipping in the bell. I have never had a liner come loose but it seems to be going around lately. If your running a GV-1, one thing is that you could get some engine surging when under hard load, as the clutch slips the engine tries to run away and the GV-1 lets it get just so far before reducing the throttle, this happens over and over causing the surging sound.

I suppose doing lots of autos could heat the bell some, but 175 degrees seems quite hot.

DK, I had a similar problem to yours with one of my extremes, heres what I found to cause the clutch to heat up and how I got rid of it.

Thanks for the replys! I took it apart and one shoe on the clutch bell looked burned and the other one appeared normal. I'm assuming that the one side was sprung and was dragging all the time.
