I built up a shogun and decided to run the stock motor for awhile before mounting the brushless setup. I flew it in the parking lot, just easy circuits, when I landed after about 10 minutes, the motor was literally smoking. I'm using a three cell 1450 lipo...
is this pretty common with the brushed set-up?
it actually wasn't unpleasant just flying circuits.

I have smoked several stock motors. they seem to be very easy to burn out.
I like the EF brushless. it's been good so far. just don't fly them for long periods.

I made them last a long time by only flying 5 min at a time.....it sucked waiting for it to cool. It also hampered the overall learning experience.
JGF 400DH and phoenix 25...18 min average flights at 2500 rpm with a TP2100 3s lipo. Never hotter than 120 degrees.....just at 260 hours on it with no change. Works great with a TP1320 also for almost 13 min but the 2100 ballances better.
I flew it with the stock motor for almost 80 hours....the additional head speed from the brushless was almost a magical improvement in stability and control.
Happy flying
I know its a chunk of change but for $120 (not including the battery) the difference is substantial and certainly worth it.

do you have to use the Phoenix ESC with that motor or can you use any decent Brushless ESC

on the JGF web site they advise you to use the cc25 or 35. In fact they make you check a box stating you will only use the phoenix with this motor.
I've never tried anything else....Maybe someone else can chime in that has..
