How good is the hurri for 3D?
Should I try this kinda flying or am I gonna be asking for trouble?
As some of you know I have kept it to hovering and mild FF.
I do a lot more on the sim and would rather buy a logo 500 airframe or something than plant a heli I have spent so much time on.
The collective is jumpy as it gets, some me, some the detents on my sim tx. (one more thing to do lol)

What do you guys think?

bro to make up your own mind best thing to do is kickback and watch the video bit.....it also totally relates to your set up as to what the hurri copes with and how well

just go push the hurri little by little im guessing
toes crossed and extra gears on standby.
being positive just saying gears
sounds better like that

how good is the hurri for 3D... well... Justin Chi, Kyle Stacy, Art Hughes... those are just 3 Pro pilots that fly it... have seen Art Hughes fly in person... and Justin smacks it pretty hard for a little kid.. Kyle is just an outstanding pilot all around.. if they can do Hardcore 3D... then yes, the hurri can handle it.. keep in mind though.. they aren't stick banging.. they do have collective management skills... and that's the key..
if you keep the head speed in a reasonable range (stupid fast head speed is NOT needed to 3D) there's nothing you can't do with a Hurri.. it just takes practice.. and crashing a Hurri is a hell of a lot cheaper than crashing a Logo...
I was able to do pretty much any thing I can with my Hurricane. It has a tail kick/vibration if I try to get the headspeed to 2300 so I am now running it governed at 2100 rpm. I can do stationary flips, tumbling circles, pirouette circle, inverted flights, backward, inverted backwards, funnels, inverted funnels, tick tocs, small rainbows and a whole lot more.
I recently fit it with an SK-360. This thing flies so much better FBL. I could not believe my Hurricane actually hover inverted hand off in the wind for several seconds.
I would say that you should just go ahead a fly it until the day you are not happy with its performance then upgrade.

Imo it does decently in 3d, but I wouldn't push it to hard. No more than 2300 Rpms are you are likely to have gear stripping or tail kicking tendacies with 500 mm blades doesn't always happen but when it does it's annoying. The Hurricane 550 will do everything, just have to fly big with and just don't expect to flyit just like you do in the vides since I think Justin Chi is working around a 2400-2500.
To be honest I think this is a touchy subject andI don't want to stir up the wasps nest with the Hurricane 550. Some people can get them to fly 3d really good which is, while others stumble onto problems and mishaps. . I personally get problems whenever I try to fly my 550 like I do with my Outrage G5 and T-rex 500. All I can say is that since you already own one you might want to just try it out for yourself .Maybe it may just be from the performance expectations some people have, becuase I remember being perfectly happy with my version of 3d until I got a T-rex 500 and started ripping the sky up with that @_@ .
OHh yea but if you really want a new heli you should also check out the Outrage 550, it's looking pretty sweet atm, and other than the batteries it costs just about the same to repair it as a hurricane 550/Trex 500 last time I checked, and won't break your wallet as much as a Logo 500 will in a crash. I'm thinking of getting one whenever I get enough money saved up .

depends alot on setups Im sure

i found the opposite than jujiro- i recently bought a trex 500 and imho, the hurri is better at 3d then the trex. it has more pop and better cyclic response (mind you i'm running a way tricked out hurri and using wide chord 550 cf blades) then my trex, which still boggs like a mofo but has gotten a bit better. mind you this is what i've noticed, but i've seen plenty of vids where the trex is thrown around all crazy. i've tried new lipos, better gear ratio, etc. i've even had it looked over by my friend who owns the lhs and he can't find a thing wrong with my setup so i'm thinking that maybe the stock motor just isn't up to par (for the 500)
your skills on the sim tell me that you have a good eye for orientation, but remember it's gonna be harder in real life. with that being said, i'd say give mild stuff a try, like stationary flips, rolls, loops, etc... before working up to the flips like in the beginning of the vid. i do all that stuff and more with my hurri and it holds up really well, but as mystic said, you need good collective management. so start high! good luck.
oh, and i'd run at least a 2100hs and 550 blades seem to work better for 3d. wide chords even better hehe

hmm could be a bad motor maybe, the rex shouldn't bog much on you unless you are like doing tic tocs at full deflection or something crazy like that . I replaced my stock T-rex motor with a scorpion after it started screeching on me @_@ . I Don't know why but so far I haven't liked any heli's stock motor , always seems to be some issue with it .

:arggg:
I have been using the DX-7 airplane version with fancy new labels for heli :)
Well the collective had detents on it and it didnt come with the bar to smooth it out.
I swapped it out with the one from my JR 8103H which is flat without the notch and WOW
talk about a difference
that should have been waaay higher on my things to do list.

once i get this belt drive sorted gear stripping may well become a thing of the past at higher head speeds...building a boom brace definitely makes the boom more at one with the frame negating the stripping from the rear as bob put it....

the only thing stopping me belt driving mine on the spot is a reluctance to pull her to bits when she's running so well....

yeah i'm starting to wonder. it's so wierd though because the headspeed is totally fine. i'm gonna buy the mavrikk wide chords to see if hopefully that will make a difference.
oh yeah... King Henry VIII
Marco- it's definitely hard to pull apart a fine-tuned heli when it's flying so well... i don't blame ya. so the boom support brace is to keep what from stripping?

looks into the noise here and my scorps top bearing is rough after 3 flights :rolling
not going to be ordering scorps repl set
gonna check it again tomorrow with another motor
kahn:
Can that owb setup be done with the gaui aluminum bearing blocks?

the tail brace makes the boom/boom braces a structure rather than having them hanging off the rear of the frame.when getting thrown round(in my case also called crashing) it stops the tail drive cog being able to lock against the main gear causing it to strip as claimed by finless, which lead to pos comments and a rather nasty period of gaui history.
yeah that bearing set can be used in the alloy bearing blocks tho i would go for 14x8x5's rather than the 16's i used(cause thats what was in the fishing reel i killed and gutted to do it).also i would use a press drill with a true base plate and very carefully center the bearing blocks
seriously the 12x8x4's they use have ballbearings in them like fly shit
