i was thinking of getting a electric heli, its going to be my first electric, so i read good reviews of the new zoom 400, but was thinking of getting a second hand hummingbird, are they 3d capable? any inputs would be appreciated.

Hummingbird v.II - Not 3D capable.
Hummingbird CP - Not 3D capable as stock. Requires $25 or so in upgrades to make it 3D. Have not seen this working yet. Waiting on parts.
Zoom 400 - 3D ready, but more expensive... Appears to be the top performer.
That being said, I really like my HB v.II. I have a v.II and a CP. The v.II is rugged enough to take multiple crahses on grass. Not so with the others.

Just curious. . .What upgrades do you have to get for the CP hummingbird to make it 3d capable? Any info would be appreciated.

Zoom 400 will MILD 3D stock. With a brushless and light paddles it is outstanding! My CP piccolo (the hummingbird lookalike) was garbage. I had over $1000 in it and it never thought of flying as well as my Shogun! (Zoom 400) IMHO, spend the few extra dollars and get a Shogun. You will not be disipointed

Recipe for crazy 3d hummer CP follows:
Axi 2208/20
3cell tanic 830's
metal head dremeled to allow +-12
direct drive tail
ics-50 on tail
401
berg 6
Hornet 2 blades
This is a recipe for a micro that will outclimb a 30 easily and keep right up with a 50:)
That said the zoom flys great out of the box, doesnt 3d as well as say a hornet 2 but is easier to work on and setup

OMC,
The HB CP would need the aluminum head, thinner shaft collar, and symetrical blades. You may also want a better gyro and a direct drive tail... and probably a brushless motor.
The aluminum head may need to have the slots dremeled out a bit longer (they are longer than stock already) in order to allow for enough negative pitch.
For even more unstable 3d ability, you could use the FP blade grips which have the ball closer in.

Thanks for the info. There is a problem I have with my hummingbird. I can't get the tail to stay still with the 401 gyro. with some collective as soon as the heli lifts it starts to spin counterclockwise, but on the ground it holds the heli fine. I have a CSM heading hold gyro on order (the 401 is borrowed from my hawk for the time being, where it works fine). I'm thinking my oral B toothbrush hack tail motor isn't cutting it. After the last run, which ended in a crash, the tail motor was very hot and also wouldnt turn freely. As for the rest of the heli I have a brushless motor (e flight park 370), the aluminum head block and symmetrical blades. It could use a 3 cell lipoly like tabby mentioned.
I use gws 4530 prop and adaptor for the DD motor with TREC and 401gyro on my HB CP,get the tail to stay still very well , you can give it a try.
