I have a 16 tooth pinion and I am trying to decide on motor choice. I will be running 6S (2 -Tenergy 3S 3300 packs) and 550mm carbon blades and stock gearing.
I am a beginner/sport flyer at best and 3D is a long ways off yet.
I'd like to have max flight times with enough power to get out of trouble if/when I need to do so.
I am thinking the Scorpion HK-3026, but which KV?
I have tried to research what the recommended headspeed for sport flying is but I'm not sure what would be a nice "middle ground" choice.
Any opinions?

I also live in Waukesha(Vernon). I have a Hurri, currently running - ZPower 20A 980 w/ RCP500 Blades, plastic frame over 150 flights on the frame.. Gearing 14-42-20-61 which gives around 2000 headspeed. It's great for sport and mild 3D. I'm using 2x Zippy 3s 3300 and get about 6 min, flips, rolls, loops, inverted hovering and both motor and batteries are barely warm. The Z motor is very easy on batteries. I also change out to a Z30 1110 and get around 5 min with more power.

R,
If you definitely want a Scorpion (I really like my Z20A 980 KV) you will have to go for the 1,000KV or at the absolute max the 1,200 (1,210 ??). But you won't be able to use the 16T pinion (pinions only cost $5).
Go with either the z20 980 or the Scorpion 3026 1000 with 14T pinion, 50T prmary gear and 20T one way bearing would be my recommendation - this will give yo a headspeed of approx 1,800 - ideal for learning. If you go for teh 1200 Scorpion you would need the 60T primary and a 13T pinion.
Enjoy and welcome,
Mike.

Thanks for the info so far. The heli came with a 16 tooth pinion. The guy I bought it from was running the stock motor. I assume that this is why he had the 16 tooth pinion?
I'll have to double-check the drivetrain to verify the gearing. I may have made an assumption before.
Great info so far.
It's a little different with the Hurri. I used to have a Logo 10 and it seemed that 1800 headspeed was plenty for all sorts of aerobatics but the Hurri tends to run higher headspeeds for most people according to what I've read so far.
What is the average headspeed most people like to run once more advanced maneuvers start?

If it was me doing it all over again from the beginning, I would choose a Z30, hands down.
Future proof when it comes to the Hurricane.
Gear it down or up as is your want. The motor has lots in reserve

keep in mind... there are 2 different stock motors... the 850kv and the 1100kv.. with the 850kv motor... geared completely stock (except the 16t pinion) you'd be in the 1900-2000 rpm range.. the reason most that plan on 3D go with the Z30-1110 is because it has a lot of pure grunt power... even geared down with a 16T pinion, 60T first gear, 20T OWB, and 61T main gear like bobbybe is running, it has a lot of pop...
as far as head speeds... 1800-2300 rpm... I like my head speed in the 1900-2000 range... it has plenty of power for me and MY flying style... I ran 1800 rpm for a while...it was very stable...very smooth...but I wanted a little more speed.. think I have what I wanted now... and I run the Z20a-980.. at some point I'll be on a Z30.... but that's a year or so down the road I think... my flying style right now is big loops... flips... rolls... high speed banked turns... and stall turns (540 stall turns :D)... just your basic sport aerobatics...
