I looked thru all of the past posts on this and I'm still confused.
When using the channel 5 or gear channel for the gyro sensitivity, is the gain in HH mode set with the ATV of that channel?
How is the gain set in the non-HH or normal mode? Do I merely switch to normal mode and re-adjust the ATV?
Where do I look in the menu to make sure the gyro sensitivity is enabled?

Not a JR expert but I can tell you that the way it works is this.
You have the 401 single wire assigned to a channel with a switch, lets say the gear switch.
The end point one way controls the gain in Heading hold mode, flip the switch and the end point the other direction tells it the gain in rate (normal) mode.
If you look at the channel as a whole, from full right to center to full left, if the channel were on a knob, with the knob at center the gyro is off, 0 gain in any mode, as you turn the knob right the gyro switches to HH mode and the gain starts increasing till you get to the end and thats 100 percent gain, halfway between center and full right is 50 percent gain. Same the other way, start turning left from center and it switches to rate mode and the gain starts going up till you get full left and thats rate mode with 100 percent gain. All the end points do is set the stopping point of your knob.
JR has different numbers than Futaba so I can't tell you exactly what numbers to use but start with half the available gain in each direction and see if it holds ok and doesn't wag back and forth.

break down:
Gain should be set to channel 5 unless you *know* you want to run a remote operated governor in the future.
For a basic, non governed setup, plug the three wire lead from the gyro into the RUDD channel, and the remote into AUX 1.
Go into the menu on your tx, find the gear ATV setting and set to 63% as a starting point. (both positions)
Set Rudd gain to 75% both ways.
Go to the Servo reversing menu, and flip the gear switch with the gyro on, the red LED should be solid with the switch away from you, and OFF with it pulled towards you. Reverse GEAR channel as needed to achieve this. (Turn off and back on after each change)
Set or confirm the gyro's direction, as well as the tail rotor direction.
Fuel or add a charged battery, and go thru your startup routine, place chopper on your take-off point.
Enter ATV menu in the radio, select channel 5 (Gear) and test hover. If it wags, lower the value until it quits. Test fly and tune to find the sweet spot between wagging and blowing out.
If you intend to run a governor in the future, Search Whirly-Girls post about 9303 and throttle jockey for the setup routine.. (Governor will require gear channel.. this explains how to use AUX 2 for gyro.)

When the gyro is in heading hold mode, the rudder servo does what the gyro tells it to do, not what the transmitter tells it to do. Most notably, the transmitter features that once controlled servo travel (adjustable travel volume (ATV), dual rates, etc), won't do squat.
