I took the training gear off. And I did a short hover about 4 inches off the ground, did hover flight for about 3 seconds and realized, I am not ready to give up the training gear.
Hey I tried
I will keep at it and every so often I will 'give up' the gear to see if I feel ready yet.
I was a nervous wreck though. :) I know I can do it, I am not mentally ready to give them up.
Had to tell someone...

Hi Jetgirl,
I've been on vacation, I was wondering if you got the training gear off! Go at your own pace, I've found hovering was easier at the 3-4 foot level, out of the ground effects.
Cheers,

Thats great Jetgirl. I know I just gave up my training gear about 2 months ago and man I was scared. One of the guys at my field really incouraged me to go up wihtout them and since that time I have not looked back. Since then I have come leaps and bounds with my flying and I have become alot more confident almost to the point of being cocky lol. Well the cocky part went aways today after my first attempt at a loop. Anyways keep it up Jetgirl it will come to you in your time :)

I know exactly how you feel Jetgirl.......I'm right there with you!!!
:D
I know I could do it - I fly with the sim all the time and don't have the training gear - but there is something about setting the heli down - the one you paid money for - and flying it without some kind of safety net.
:fly
We are decreasing things - we have taken the balls off and keep reducing the size of the bars - and then wait for the day we can just say the heck with it and take them off completely.
We'll get there!!

I cheated when I dropped the training gear, I started with a hula-hoop with the crossed dowels, then dropped the hula hoop, and then every time I got brave I cut 4" off the dowels till they were small enough not to bother with. Just put wiffle balls on the end of the dowels so they don't dig.

4 inches up is the worst place to hover! Thats the 'lets drift sideways and drop a fraction so the skids can bounce and trip over sideways and ding your rotors' zone. Better to hover at least knee high, even better take her upto your normal hover height well out of rotorwash. Its only that last few inches you have to set her down nice and level, just don't spent too long in that trip over zone.......

Nice job! I think that it is a good idea to keep taking the gear off once in a while so that you can be mentally ready to keep them off. That is the important part!! Good Luck!

Jetgirl,
Try getting up a little bit higher, maybe just slightly lower than eye level. When you hover too low you have really unstable air from the disk and it's actually harder to keep it steady than if you were at least a couple of blade lengths above the ground. Keep at it, it only gets better.

Gary O is right - I have even found hovering about 20 feet in the air is even more fun and more stable!!!!
