The scale nats is complete with the following results, ordered to place.
Len Mount with a museum quality Westland Scout.
Dr. Tim Dawson with a Baumann Puma
Bob Harris with an old Hiller with a most unusual paint scheme (documented)
Darrell Sprayberry with an Apache that he didn't complete in time.
Of noteable mention, Joe Howard had an awesome Skycrane, that had engine issues, and if he had flown he would have placed somewhere in the top 4, tho probably not first. Len's machine was magnificent.
Also of note, the AMA told us that the scale helicopter competition was the ONLY nats competition that had an increase in participation. Most of the rest were down by 20-30%

Darrell did enter a Cobra, electric powered at that, a little more detailing and documantation, and eliminating a few bugs and he will have a really competitive machine.

I had a great time putting this event together. It wasn't hard to do and everyone co operated to make it flow smoothly. Even the AMA helped by finding us our own area and mowing it smooth for us, setting up a tent, tables and chairs etc. I think the fact that we had more entries than all the other classes except F3C put together made a significant impact. Thats one reason why its important to get an entry in even if you dont make it, it shows scale helis are alive and well out there. Here are some pictures of some of the models.

wow, looks like he didnt have his failsafes set ... i'd have it to lower the throttle a bit but that seemed to have went to complete idle... glad its still in one piece.

He regained control about 5 feet of ground and was able to soften the landing, just sprung the nose wheel a little. He also had a brief lockout on the first practice flight on Sat. , but everything was fine until sun. Dave

I am absolutely amazed with the turn-out from what I have been told and have read. Don't you know there were tears in my eyes when I found out the only date for surgery on my back put me the window of not being able to the Nats or IRCHA. The surgery is complete, however, it will be another 3-4 weeks before I can sit in or drive a vehicle for more than an hour.
Also, and of note, Peter Wales did a superb job of running the competition, and my congratulations to Len, Dr. Tim, Bob and Darrell. During the past year, each one of these individuals has, at one time or another, helped me...just disappointed I couldn't get out there.

hhhmmmm I'll have to call Tim and see why the engine starved for fuel. I assume there was a fair wind as Dr Tim usually hovers much better that that. :dontknow
Congrats to all that competed. Most have no idea the work and pain that goes into one of those scale heli's. I had the privilege to watch Tim do a fair portion of the build on the Puma. Amazing what a guy can do with toilet paper .. besides wipe!

I Hover a great deal better when no one is watching! Sent in the receiver, Futaba says it was a Cracked Xtal board ... They are replacing the receiver for me. No real Damage though, Just glad I got control back when I did. Maybe I will set the Throttle a bit higher for FailSafe .... 25% is too low!!
IRCHA was something all together different! Just as I finished my mandatory Manuevers I had some Freq. battle with a youngster who was testing his helicopter before he put his radio in inpound . We flew at 8 AM and most people arrived after we started to fly so they have not put thier radios in inpound yet. Helicopter rolled over and broke the blades and tail fin. After I scrambled to get a new set of blades and repaired the damage I found the Mainshaft to be bent a lttle as well. I was unable to complete a round of flying. Next year !! My Congrats go out to Butch, Emile, Darrell, Joe and a few others for doing such magnificent work!! The Apache was Beautiful!!!!
