Hi,
I am running an OS 50SX-H Hyper engine on a raptor 50 Titan Heli. What would the maximum safe operating temperatrure be for this engine in Centigrades or Farenheit?
Thx for the help.

Well I think everyone uses about 240F for most any heli motor. The Hyper 50 is a pain in the ass to tune right. Odds are you will have to mess with that center mixture screw (more rich) then dial it in. Pay close attention to page 21-22 in you manual.

Thx Debiandog. Will follow your advise. Whats a good location to measure that temperature? Fins just below the head? Crankshaft body?

Hyper should run about 165-185 F

Stick your finger on the backplate. If you cant hold it there for atleast 3 seconds you're too lean, if its cold your too rich, if its warm but not burning you it should be producing good power w/o tearing up your engine.

I am now a big believer in the "feel the backplate" method. I used to try and take temps but this seems just as effective and is faster.
Hyper should run about 165-185 F
He said MAX

Three Completely different temperatures but only ONE say WHERE the temperature should be taken, which was one of the questions.
I take my temperature on the back of the cylinder right under the oversize fins. On Raptors that is the most accesible place. With a backplate buring my finger at about 4 seconds, I get around 220 degrees right under the head. I use an RC Car thermometer (IR) to measure my temperature.

Thx guys. Looks like the finger approach is best since no tools required. I do have an IR temperature gauge so will check the correct temp at 3-4 seconds on backplate and will report this temperature as measured at the back plate which seems the right place to take it where no confusion can be caused by measuring it in different places or angles etc.

165-185 F seems to be the best range. I went a hotter and burned the piston so I thing it is safer to be on the cool side. Stay cooler until you feel comfortable tuning the engine, I am still grounded and that just stinks. :arggg:
