View Full Version : Mechanical collective adjustment - how to get 10 to -10

I checked my pitch on my Raptor 50 last night and it's 14 to -9. Not good.

I also checked the servo arm and link from the collective servo. With the Pitch Curve set linear, and the End Points at 100 and 100, everything looked ugly!

With the servo arm 90 deg to the servo, the link was too long in one direction and too short in the other direction. This is trying to get max throw on the helicopter's "collective arm".

If I moved the servo arm such that it was closer to 90 deg with the ball link, still had the same issue - too long in one direction but too short in the other.

So what is the sequence of steps I should take to set up the servo/servo arm/ball link for collective, and in turn, once that is set up, what is the best way to get 10 to -10 deg mechanically without making significant changes with the TX???

After working on my Trex for so long, I think working on the CCPM head is actually easier!!!

Anyway, any words of wisdom???

Thanks,
Rockohaulic

This is how I do it and it works for me.

1. If your servo is not installed with the output shaft toward the front of the helicopter install it that way. Link ball about 18mm from the center of the servo arm.
2. Use the inside link ball on the pitch lever.
3. With the servo arm dead center at mid stick set the link from the collective servo to the pitch arm to the length the puts the other end of the pitch arm at the mid point of the slot in the frames.
4. Shorten the double link from the washout arms to the blade holder as short as you can get them.
5. Adjust the long links from the swash to the mixer arms so that mixer arms are parallel to the ground with the flybar level, about 100mm long.

You should be real close now. If you don't have exactly zero pitch at mid stick and your mixer arms are parallel to the ground with the flybar level, make the following adjustments.

If you need to increase pitch lengthen the double links slightly. If you need to decrease pitch shorten the the long link between the swash and mixer arms.

Ok now you have zero pitch set at mid stick. Now check your throws and set your servo end points to give you the pitch you want.

I hope this helps

Try this following the video instructions, at half collective adjust the pitch change links to acquire zero degrees on the blades with a level swashplate.

Hi Eric,

First, thanks for the favorable comments on my tool and setup method. Glad to hear you are enjoying your Raptor 30/50 V1/V2 Swashplate Leveling (Setup) Tool.

I got a PM last night from "syn-" and told him how to get one of my tools.

If you visit my website http://web.tampabay.rr.com/helipad/ and look in the bottom right hand corner you will see a free download Raptor 30/50 linkage setup form that I developed in Microsoft Word that allows you to record your linkage lengths during your setup. That way if you ever crash you can verify the linkage lengths when replacing any damaged or missing links. That will get you real close and then you can check your settings by inserting my tool (with the radio off) as it will position the collective at the center "O" pitch position.

Easy way to get repeatable setups. Instructions are included with the tool and are also available on my website . Also if you look at the instructions for this tool on the website you will see the other tools I use during the setup process. I have links to Rick's R/C Helicopters that will allow you to get a good visual look at the tools and associated costs.

If you have any other questions feel free to send me a PM.

Enjoy! :D

Hi John,

Favorable comments are always warranted when the product deserves it. This is a great product, and way easy user friendly. :)

Wait till you see my NEW 90 Canopy "Swash By Heli John" "Motor By Nob" ought to get some comments out of that.....

Gonna be towing a 12ft enclosed trailer to IRCHA. When you leaving?

Hi Eric,

Thanks again for letting me borrow your Raptor 90SE for the design of my new swashplate leveling (setup) tool for that model helicopter. Guess that makes you a factory REP. Ha Ha Man! my name on a custom canopy. It that great or what?????

I am going to bring an assortment of the tools I manufacturer to IRCHA and they will be available at the B & B Hobbies storefront area. They told me that they were bringing a bunch of the Jersey Modeler fuel jugs and the TREX 600's. They also have great deals on repair parts.

I think I will be leaving early on Monday August 7. I will be driving one of the flightline golf carts. Can't wait to see all the flying action.

Becky also promised to make some nice stuff to eat. Yummy!!!!

Good friends, Good Flying, Good Eats. You can't beat that.

See you there.

John
