Hi HeliFreak's

I have a Stratus Airframe recently built and i am having serious thoughts about finding someone that would like to do a clean swap for a Spectra airframe..

I would be doing Hard 3D with it...

What are the Pro's and Con's...

i really like the idea of the spectra's with the 40Cent flights ehhee..

any ideas or suggestions would be Much appreciated.
Cheers,

Hey Matt,

I was considering buying a Spectra G but opted for the Stratus (although I think they are two very different helis). The main reason for this was after talking to a guy who was selling a Spectra G but was going to keep a hold of his 2 off 90 Extremes. After a couple of minutes on the phone he levelled with me, that while the Spectra G is cheap to run and is capable of 3D, it is heavy. Very heavy.

He told me that if you got your collective control wrong, it would drop like a stone, although it performs well in big winds. I must add before I get shot down, that I have never flown a Spectra G, and this is all just what I was told by this particuar gent. Just wanted to get the debate going and give you a reply......
PS. The Stratus Rocks!

Thanks John for the reply.

i have felt how heavy a spectra is and i reckon it is no different to the weight of a Craptor 90 se

i think there would be ways around the "dropping like a stone" for instance, running higher headspeeds, different pinion to main gear ratios.. and blade size..

Thanks for the reply.
Cheers,
matt

The Spectra G is at least a Kilogram heavier than a Stratus.
It will do 3D. But it is not going to do it the same as a helicopter that is a Kilogram lighter.

The Spectra will handle 720 mm blades. Same as the Stratus.

One thing I know is you can not have the open t/r box on the Spectra. Secondly, I am not an expert, but I've been told gas engines do not like high RPM's. Close to two lbs. in waight in my opinion makes big defference in 3D flying.
Good luck with either one.

Both my Spectra G's fly with the open T/R box . The latest output shaft is definitely strong enough.. I fly " sorta 3D" , but one of Australia's best recently put my G through its paces, it's definitely no slouch .. I have a Stratus as well, it really does fly " harder" .. the G never fails to impress all who fly it though ...
I have a TRM 231 in one machine , a std 231 in the other , TRM motor holds 1800 on the head effortlessly , 231 is happier at 1760 on the GV1... Both are very nice to fly, but do feel heavy after the Stratus...

Peter,
There is a good number Spectra's here in the USA that have the open gear box also. I know of a few that are the original open gear boxes. The owners still using them with the original gears and out put shaft with no problems after 100's of flights.
As with most thing, the power of the internet blows things out of proportion.

Yep , if it's on the 'net , it's gotta be true !!! :badair: :badair: :badair:

I prefer flying the Spectra G's over the Extremes I've got , the Stratus is very nice too ....

might just have to have Both

Now that's somthing to think about

The Stratus is definiately a heli you will need to fly. Although I do like the Spectra, it is a bit more heavy and although can do 3d well, it just doesn't seem to have the spunk as compared to the nitro heli, this in my most humble opinion.

I am sure there are guys (& gals) out there that can prove me wrong but until such time I see it in person, I would stick to the Stratus.

And agin, as you mentioned, why not get both.

hehehe, well the thing about getting both is,

i am 16 years old earning not very much money at all.. and i have to pay for my own stuff.. my parents stopped paying for me when i broke my Fury extreme... and then my stratus completey demolished itself... so this is a full rebuilt heli LOL..

Thanks very much for the input guys.. i think i am gonna go pump some gas into my veins... anyone in australia that has a spectra they want to swap for a stratus Pm me... just airframes only...

Thanks guys
Matt
