Hi all,

I am new to RC helis. Bought, built and started hovering a TT50 Titanium. Mechanical setup OK, radio (7C) ajusted after some difficulties and now I am wondering if the engine is running OK:

1) Engine sounds good, some smoke (10% nitro Wildcat fuel). After short hover (4-5 min) engines feels hot. Backplate can be touched shortly, but won´t produce blisters. Top part (cool ribs) IS hot! OK or a little too hot still?

2) Muffler throws a lot of oil - is this normal? whole tail is covered in thin oil after one tank flying. :badair:

You should be able to touch and hold the backplate. Some oil is expected but yours sounds excessive. Not sure about that one. Brand new motor? If so you may be able to lean it out a tad after it breaks in and cools off. New motor=friction.

Do u think u should use a 20%?

Wow - fast answers on this machine!

Dan, I can definetely not hold my finger there. And yes it's new (5 tanks now). T'was ajusted in Denmark by experienced instructor for first flight (1 tank) and was cooler then. Here it's 2100 ft. higher altitude and just a triffle warmer :smokin: . Did ajust 2-3 clicks fatter on the needle to ajust for this though.

Eerie: Donow, US guys generaly use more nitro and Danish instructor said start with 10 % and go up later with higher 3 D demands. But what the heck - there seems to be a million preferences to N%.

Well TT motor are not renowned for being the most consistent runners. You may find you have to retune it next time out depending on the heat/humidity also the elevation may have something to do with how rich you are having to run (lots of oil)... not exactly sure there either.

I find 20% is plenty for me but bought a case of 30% to see if I could tell the difference. With -my- flying probably not :(

a simple engine temp gauge is what ya need. takes the guess work out of it! a temp of 280 F is what your looking for

I am using a 20% and just complete my first gallon. And i am running rich. I have yet to tune / lean it. As for now, i do notice the 15% better fuel comsumption compared to a Hyper. From my observation, i have more flight time compared to those with the Hyper engine.

Hi Hookmaker. I have used both OS Hyper and TT50 engines - the TT50 seems to run hotter but you definitely should be able to keep your finger on the backplate for at least 5 seconds straight after you land from hovering.
I would suggest you richen the low speed needle and consider the low speed needle mod. Remember that the low speed needle controls the mixture in the TT50 well past 50% throttle opening.
Good luck

10% is more then enough Nitro as you are just learning.
You haven't had anywhere near enough fuel through it for it to be run in.
There is no point in playing around with the needles too much yet (fine-tuning) as it's settings will change until the engine is fully broken in.

Running it that rich certainly won't hurt it in any way or fashion.
Give it 15-20 tanks and you will see how the engine smoothes out all by itself.
The TT50 will deliver good power and excellent idle/throttle characteristics if run in gentle.

Hey, Rotor-krazy, 280 F sounds a little HOT. I doubt you can hold your finger on the back plate for more than a second or two. I have two OS 50s and a 37, all of them run 200 degrees or less. With those temps I can hold my finger on the back plate for approximately 5-10 seconds before it gets uncomfortable. I would say that 230 is the maximum temp for these engines.

Hi All, Thanks for the very fast responses you guys have all thrown in. I guess I'll just keep running so far - It doesn´t seem there any danger of crashing the engine out of leanness.

Any more comments on the oil throwing, though?

You might have over filled the tanks or something..then ifs its overflow, the crank will lock... i m not sure..

In my case, I run Hyper 50 on my Falcon with XP Fuel with 15% nitro and keep my engine near of 225 F. Over 235-245 it's becoming hotter a little bit. over 260 F it,s very very hot and you must open the mixture tu cool the engine.

Hi All,

Hovered a few tanks today, at different speeds. Did a good deal of ajustment and what realy helped me was the fuel line pinch trick to get started on the low speed needle and then the high speed needle. Now it's running a little fat but the backplate of the engine is nice and cool at all times!
Thanks for all the tips, guys!
