I have also heard 6S is the max on the esc. I don't think soft start is as "soft" as on my Jazz... but its quite a bit better than my hacker 70. I'm running full 6V setup - 9451's - 611 - I am using the step down bec for the 9256 - but I have seen many posts where folks are running it at full 6 w/no problems.

Ok well I can't understand why not just a Medusa or a Koolflight 45V max input bec? I run two on my logos, they are 10S as well and no issues ever. I understand obviously the flight times will be shortened by taking all the juice for the servos, gyro etc.... but is there any other real reason for running a sep rx pack, other than maybe 30 seconds tops more flight time...?

Shawn,

I know what you mean. I used a 35V Koolflight Ubec on my old Logo 20 and now have it installed in my Swift. I have never had a problem with this unit. It's great to have one less battery to worry about.

However, a Koolflight 45V Ubec on my Ion burnt out while I was doing some linkage adjustments on the bench. I was holding one of the cyclic servo's at the time to test it's holding power. This may have stalled it out resulting in too much current draw for the Ubec to handle. I did not think that I held it that tightly to do this, but this is what I think happened.

Since then, I've gone back to using an 1100 mah Rx battery on the Ion. I top this up every 2-3 flights.

I think that the main thing you need to keep in mind is that your Logo's are much lighter heli's than your Ion. The Ion is probably going to work those servos a little bit harder and draw a bit more current. It's too bad that Koolflight did not increase the 3A cont, 5A peak to say, 5A cont, 8A peak when they came out with the 45V unit.

Cheers,

Tom C

We did some research into 90 size power requirements a while back. CCPM systems can produce large current spikes as all 3 servos try to fight inertia simultaneously during abrupt pitch changes. My buddy KCT over at the other forum has full details but I'll summarize...

With standard 90 equipment 3x 9252 CCMP, GV-1 + 9254, 6*1 + 925* we observed the following...
- Fury 90 (CCPM) - approx 2.5A sustained, with spikes as high as 10A
- Ion-X (CCPM) - consistently slightly less than the Fury, same routine, same pilot - we attribute the reduced current draw to the reduced vibration
- Raptor 90 - (mech) in the Fury 90 ballpark, but spikes not as high

I flew a UBEC in one of my Ions for a while but it couldn't maintain voltage under load and the controls felt 'mushy' and inconsistent compared to regulated lipo power, so depending on your flying style it may or may not work for you.

Ok now that makes sense, no more dumb questions from me in this regard!@ Tottaly understood now, thak you!!! I will get a sep pack and be done with it then.

what i am wondering is, if that 3-3.5 amp align stand alone bec will handle the draw and spikes of an ion?
planning on a 2 cel 2100-2500 mah lipo rx power supply, whichever regulator i wind up with

But do you REALLY want to find out? ;)

of course not, i am wanting someone else to find out, and report back here<G>

I just happen to have an alighn trex 600, stand alone bec and drop down regulator. I have an apex 2000mah lipo that is already fitted snugly in the battery compartment. The align bec is on edge facing forward(and perpendicular to the long side of the heli), in front of the motor and firmly attached with some hook and loop, and a big tie wrap.

I don't know when I will be able to try it, the storm(for those that have been watching the news), looks like it might disect florida, so might be busy at work making sure all of our construction sites are storm ready. Will try as soon as things are good..... :D
