Has anyone had a problem like this with the hacker speed control? I am running mine in normal mode with a 9Z transmitter.
Hover mode 0-80%
Idle up 1 100-75-100
Mixing from 30-60% on elevator > throttle
Mixing from 30-60% on aileron > throttle

The controller enables in normal mode with 1 beep then 5 more single beeps for normal mode. Next start to slowly move the throttle and lift the heli in the air. The speed control will continue to pick up speed until it is at 100% about 2200 rpm head speed. Any suggestions? Also I have about 50 flights on this heli.

What problem? The speed control taking forever to get up to speed? That is normal, it's the safe start feature.

Russ sets his Ion on the ground, spins the blades with his hand, steps back and flips the idle up switch. The safe start will slowly bring the blades up to speed in thirty seconds or so. Don't do this if the motor is turning, you'll eat up the drive train.

Sounds like you’re just in the soft start mode. I always use the soft start by putting it in hold and then moving my stick to center or in to idle up then releasing hold. When you just advance the throttle slowly in normal it would soft start about half the time and the rest of the time it would start hard or follow the curve. Soft start is very slow to come to full RPM. 2200 is a little high, what curve are you getting that RPM on?

Russ

I know it has a soft start that is not the problem. I have a 55 tooth gear and it should be at about 1880-1900 rpm. It does not stop at that speed, it just continues to full speed 2200-2300rpm. I had even put a max of 60% throttle max in hover mode and it still went to over 2200 rpm.

Skippy,

Call the guys at Hacker, specifically talk to either Sean or Jason if you can get them on the phone. If you are running the ION 5s4p packs with the 55t there is no way you should be getting that much headspeed and might be an inidcation of a problem. If you are running higher voltage packs then that would be a reason for the higher headspeed.

Their number is 480-726-7519

Hi Skippy,

Yes that’s high for the 55 tooth, better check up on it as Jon suggested.

Thanks for the help Guys. Spoke with Aero today and looks like the firmware may have went south. Will be sending it back for repair/replacement. Will give everyone an update when its returned.

Hi everyone,

Wanted to give you an update on my speed controller problem. Received my new speed control from Aero Models and same motor. Put helicopter in the air and rotor head was still over speeding 2200rpm. Set new TC to 100-90-80-70-80-90-100. Rotor head dropped to an acceptable rpm, about 1900. Checked motor and speed control temp 4.0min into flight. Motor 200 degrees, Speed control 145 degrees. Will be sending both back to Aero Models. Any suggestions?

Maybe the problem was with the motor not the controler, they should have checked it with moor care maybe.

Russ McC,

Yes I agree. After speaking with Sean @ Aero Model they really don’t have a lot of test equipment. Hoping to get this resolved next week. I’ll keep you updated.

Skippy,

With the 9Z, there is a built in cyclic to throttle mix. I believe that it is on the CND | SWP menu. Keeps from having to use up multiple mixes, and automatically prevents overdriving the servo [in case of glow] or sending an unexpected pulse width to the speed controller.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to give an update on my speed control/Motor problem. Called Areo Model this morning and spoke with Chris in service. They had not looked at it yet but said they would get right on it. Chris Called back in just a few minutes. looks like the rotor slipped on the main shaft (Not Good). Chris stated they have had this problem on only a few Ion-X motors. So keep an eye on the motor temps and if they start to increase, you may have the same problem I did.

B@@MER,

call 'em. seems to be the way they work. they sit on stuff, you get no word, call them up and they seem to suddenly work on your stuff. If you don't pester them it will sit there for awhile.
