I've got a video here of my nitro RaptorCam doing an auto. On board camera. I was at about 12lb. Auto'd fine. Would have been even better had the clutch not stuck and kept the engine being driven by the rotor. I think I was also a tad lean causing the unclean disengagment of the engine.

What is your pitch setup for your camera ship when doing autos?

I only run about -3 or -4 pitch on my camera ship while in the air, as I don't need anything more, but how much is needed for successful a auto with a loaded camera ship?

Thanks

I think I had about -5° on that flight. all you need to keep the head turning is about -4 to -6. Anything more won't speed the head up any more and will cause you to drop faster.

I had a range of -6 - + 12 on the Observer.

Thanks DJ, Will,

Much appreciated.

I guess I asked on the bottom end, now Will after you posted your whole range, you got me thinking, what do I need on the top end to arrest the heli when it's falling from the sky?

My max pitch on my AP ship is +10.

Do I need +12 to land it at the end of the auto?

I would like to stay at +10 if 10 is more than enough for the auto as it gives me more resolution on my stick and not as touchy if I had +12 in there.

Thanks

I would say it depends on the weight of the heli the size and brand of the blades. Some blades have a lot more lift at slow headspeeds and need less top end pitch to arrest teh descent than others. Those are V-Blades on the Observer and they maintain their lift at low headspeeds as well as any SYM blades I have tried. V's also need very little negative, probably less than 2 or 3 degrees of negative during the descent phase of the auto, they ahve so much bite that if you over pitch them in negative it will stop the head. Other brands of blades I have flown need a substancial amount more negative than the V's.

What brand and what size is your AP ship? How much does it weigh. What size and brand of blades are you running?

Scott you can have a settingof +12 only when on throttle hold so that your nomal mode can still have +10 and you'll keep the resolution

My AP ship is a Raptor Titan 50.
It is somewhere in the 10-12ish pound range loaded up, I don't have an exact right now.

I am running 600mm ThunderTiger carbon blades.

I am looking into getting some 620's for it as the titan will run them out of the box.

Thanks!

Will

Too bad there wasn't a camera on your heli at the time. That'd been cool to see. Like DJ with out the hanging clutch.

Well now that you asked Mark, I'm sure Will will do it again with a camera on it.

It's just goofing around to him...

Seriously Will, it would be cool.

Oh yeah, I forgot throttle hold has its own pitch curve, even though I have been burnt by that before!

Thanks, that's what I'll do.

I would not recommend to many autos at that weight and 600's. Stretch it to run 680's like DJ is running and it should auto fine at 12 pounds.

As they a few have seid, you only need the extra pitch in hold.

THere was a chunk of tool steel on the Observer for those autos, all I had was a 10D or GL2 at the time, so I did not want to risk it, yea I was a wimp I guess. ;)

Pity the flash card popped out on my last auto or we could see how an unsuccessful auto is done. Lost the t/r bellcrank at 50' and almost pulled it off. No film at 11, however.
