I heard there is an optional gearing for the Titan to run 1:8.73 instead of 1:8.5? Why do all the kits come with the 85 tooth gear, and what would be the benefit to the 1:8.73?
I am running the OS 50 Hyper
Thanks

Well the benefit is lower head speed while keeping the engine in its power band.
At 8.5:1 you need 2000 rpm on the head to get the os at 17K which seems to be its happy spot.
With the new gears its 1950, not that big a change but a little easier on the heli IMO, thats the same as my Sceadu runs.
But ideally we want to run the engine above it's peek power,
so that when we load the engine it falls into the peek power zone,
(Curtis says to do this...)
The Sceadu Evo's run 8.7 gearing
The Century Raven & Falcon can run 8.7, 9 or 9.4
I think 8.7 is a good place to be...the OS50 just loves to rev anyway

You can run the 30 gearing and at 17200 gives 1800 on the head.

Where do you get this opt. gearing? I,m rebuilding so it would be a good time to change.

So what is the part number for the optional gear?

I posted this many moons ago about the Raptor 30 gearing of 9.56 in the 50 and bring the engine where it needs to be without swinging the piss out of the blades. The response I got was............ :arggg: But everyone that flys my ZeroG says WOW! 9/86 gearing and while yer in there put Jap or American Bearings on the pinion. Also you can read that the hyper rpm range is 2-20,000 with 17K being where they rate the horsepower. Just an observation not a fix!

I use 30 gearing on both R50 V2's they run superb especially the 50 with the hatori 540 pipe it sit there all day at 1850 on the head dont even need a govener :smokin:

I haven't seen the part on other sites in the states here either. The Only raptors site says it is backordered.

Guys and girls...that part we are waiting for is out!!!!
I went to the hobby shop just now and saw all the stuff...gears, carbon T booms...and the T-rex 600 fins...which fits our fin mounts

hey guys a question... I have 30/50 conversion using stock 30 gearing (9T/86T = 9.86) and running a Toki 40 and 600mm woodies (glued roots).
I just bought a used OS 50 SX-H (pre-Hyper) and Revolution muffler combo, because technically the Toki, while it's a good engine, is rated to a max blade length of 550mm.
so my question: is it ok to just keep the stock 30 gearing (from your posts I presume it is); or put another way, is there a benefit?
I'm not seeking screaming HS anyway, at least not while running the woodies (intermediate pilot here), but rather a motor strong enuf to swing the 600mm mains (I'll add the 600mm CF Mavrikk blades later)
so pls check my math: .50 motor at 17k rpm div by R30 stock gear ratio (86/9 = 9.56) = about 1780 on the head?
it looks like going to the R50 gearing of 10/85 would yield a HS of 2000 rpm, which is more than I need or could handle at the moment
can you guys give me your thoughts/comments/etc?
thx

Eric has since gone back to the 8.5 gears on that ZeroG so that post you quoted doesn't reflect his current setup or feelings.

Barracuda, I see you around a bit here; any thoughts on my gearing post?

It will fly it just wont be snappy like it will at the higher speeds, keep the wood blades uner 1700 anyhow.

I spent quite a bit of time reading everybody's posts on this issue. I am a new-be and didn't want these high head speeds but wanted more power........I came up with spread sheets and tried several different headspeeds to see power and responsiveness. After all was said and done I came to a conclusion.
If you "need" power you probablly are a good enough pilot to "use" the power and you want more cyclic control anyway. That's why the optimal motor speed ends up being at these pretty high head speeds. If you're just learning hovering and forward flight you don't need high headspeeds AND you can get by with your motor being outta the powerband.
Hope this helps. I ended up taking the head speed to 1950 and going with the CF mavrikk blades and LOVE the setup compared to low HS and woodies. People say mavrikks stink (and they might compared to the other high end carbon blades) but they rock compared to wood.

lotto thx...I'm a fairly good (I think) pilot, but I'm a noob to nitro & Raptors... which is why the questions
to clarify, then: initially, to keep the HS down a bit w/ the woodies, you tried the stock R30 gearing of 9T/86T (using a .50 motor)
then, you switched to the R50 gearing (10T/85T), bumping the HS, and added the Mav CF mains...which made the heli really rock?
what paddles you using?
thx

Hi Poiyt,
My story is long and boaring/complicated. I started with (and still fly regurlarly) a hawk with a totally underpowered OS .32 engine. I wanted to maximize that motor as long as I could by putting it square into the power band. Well to do that ment putting the head speed up to around 1900 rpm which kept giving me images of blades letting loose and impailing friends and family.
Well eventually I decided to go with the carbon fiber blades and also threw on some green Thunder Tiger paddles. By the time a friend and I got the head speed properly set with an optical tach I had thrown the expo way way up and started to get the feel for my new helicopter. The damm heli was amazing. It just begs to be slammed around and I was hooked. Only real problem was that stupid .32 engine which I was still to cheap to replace.
After 3-4 days of tossing the hawk around (and really learning some collective management) I sprung for the new motor. I think I deserve it now and will be able to take advantage of it.
All this fun on a hawk (yes....I'm a cheap date). I can't wait till I start trying to push my raptor 50 around. I'm no longer thinking of changing any gearing out. I purchased a metal mavrikk head and the red dampners. 2000 rpm here I come.......
I'm embracing the high headspeeds while just keeping the hovering at about twice the distance I was before. If you fly planes you'll get this.....paddles and high head speed are like changing your aleron throw from 8 degrees to 45 degrees. The plane REALLY comes to life. just gotta make sure you've got the skills to handle it. :)
