View Full Version : Receiver Battery

Is there such a weight disadvantage to run a dedicated receiver battery pack versus a BEC? Seems the the BEC not only is often another device that can fail, but I have even read how they can interfer with signal processing. Is there a reason I would NOT want to set up a 550 with a receiver battery? Seems to me I could run a small pack, even a small 123 or lipo and come out about the same for weight and have the additional insurance against loss of control power. Advice?

Going to be alittle heavier. Personally i like not having to worry about how many packs i can fly before i have to recharge the rx pack. A buddy of mine runs the A123 for a rx pack on his nitro and he is starting to win me over so I'm on the fence myself.

I'm running a seperate lipo. 2200 for the rondo flybarless. i'm also running 8cells flight pack. I did a 5 minute pretty hard flight yesterday, and put 186mah back into the pack.

Yeah, I would think even a small 1000 mah pack would be plenty for several flights. I could carry two if needed. I normally fly at least two birds, so I am not repeating flights more than once or twice anyway. I figured a small lipo for least weight with a knockdown for the low voltage needs. Hopefully it wouldn't be too crowded. This aspect of setup is something I'd like to investigate at IRCHA. I know I wan't a 550, but still undecided on power. I read threads on stripping gears on 12S in tic tocs, and since I am a hack, I expect I'll be mashing the sticks on ocassion due to ineptitude, so I have about decided against 12S for that reason, unless I learn something more. that said, I am next after the highest reliability. I wanna fly-recharge-fly-recharge (it's okay if there is delay time between since I can fly the T500 when the OR550 is down), but I don't want to play an expensive experimentation project to determine proper setup for good performance for a 5 min flight. Longer is nice, but nerves need a break after 5 mins anyway. LOL!

well, i've just completed mine & still waiting on my servos to arrive but my electrics build will include a BEC & 1050mah rhino 2cell, i'll be using savox 1258TG all round which are pretty light & not that power hungry but it's just the added security why i chose to go down the Rx pack road http://www.helifreak.com/album.php?albumid=2999

I too was going to go with 12 cell set-up but i went with an eight cell instead. The problem with 12 cells is the pinion ends up being too small, and not enough teeth contact the main gear. The seperate 2200 mah pach i got i could fly maybe 7 flights before i have to recharge. But i have a bantam duel 8 cell charger, so i can recharge anytime i need to.

Why is a BEC needed if you have a receiver battery?

I think there's a lil mixup some times when we're discussing BEC vs UBEC vs reg, but your question as stated would be correct for someone that's planning to simply have a voltage reg between a 2S lipo and their rec or even Nicad's straight to the rec.
I think some folks believe that the weight reduction is worth taking the chance of a seperate UBEC/BEC so that a rec bat CAN be eliminated (I too am one that prefers this setup). After all, if you can't rely in a little UBEC that's only pushing less than 5A, then how can you have faith in a big one that's pushing 2-3 HP through it?
All in all, think it purely comes down to personal preference.:thumbup::thumbup:
I like the weight reduction, simplicity, less bats to charge, less cost, and only ONE bat to plug in :clappp
On the other side, my "trusty" ESC happens to be the one that's acting wacky and my lower cost UBEC does great up to 10S.

Sorry - I am confused...are you running the rhino 2S AND BEC in the same heli? If so, why?

Hi, I am running an outrage 2s 2500 lipo with an align BEC/reg. i put the receiver in the butt of the heli. I am thinking about switching to a bec so i can get rid of a little weight, and it will balance better, and not have to worry about charging the receiver pack. I run 8s 4000mah hyperions.

Hows those hyperions working for you? I just ordered a set cause Outrage only has 3700 or 4200 size packs. If they do work i plan to order about 4 or 6 sets. If you want, i can find the link for the HV UBEC that has worked great for me and i think it was only about $25.

Hi, the hyperions are the best batteries by far i have ever used. I used to use thunderpower. I have about 40 cycles on my hyperions. I have 2 4s packs seriesed. I charge them seperate on thunderpower chargers. I charge them at 10 amps each and they charge in about 20 minutes, They have never gotten hot, even after bashing them around for 4 minutes. With the hyperions you will have to add about 3/16 of an inch width to the side frames that go around the battery. I used 2 rivet washers on each frame spacer, it is perfect. if you run 6s i don't think you will have to modify anything.
That link would be great. I haven't decided on a BEC yet but i don't think I can go wrong for $25. Thanks,
-Wayne

You must be flying like a Pro to heat up a rx pack :)

Yea i got my hyperions in yesturday and ive already put several flights on them and i too am amazed how cool they come down and im pushing 5:30 flight times but im only running a gov HS of about 2100. I cant go any higher until Outrage finally gets some darn tail pulleys in, cause my 770/8900 combo goes crazy with anything higher.
The UBEC that ive been running is by Exceed RC and its the HV one. It does 5 or 6v at 5A continuous with 7.5A peaks and can take input volts of 3 to 10S lipo!

I was sooo jazzed about building a 550, but with the ESC challenges/risks, and reports of poor pulley quality, and suspect plastic quality, I am beginning to doubt. Thought maybe the new CC Phoenix ICE HV100 with data logger and 5A BEC would be an excellent choice, but who knows what we'll see regarding programming, firmware, and hook-up smoke, I just don't know. Maybe the boys at IRCHA this weekend will win me back. Otherwise, I am looking for a fifty nitro.
