Thermal mass in the tip of your iron. Those weller trigger soldering guns dont have it. You need a good 'ol pencil type soldering iron with a big tip. 100 watts works great. Oddly they are more expensive than the trigger gun type. They are very popular for stained glass work :

They are also great for soldering to battery cells. Real quick.

I use a dual watt 20/40 Radio Shack iron. Had it in my shop for over 7 years and it's what I use all the time.

For larger wires like 10ga. it's a little underpowered but for 98% of RC hobby stuff it does great.

The other trick withthe deans to keep them in shape is to plug the opposite end into the deans you are soldering to hold it in shape until it cools. This way they are not hard to plug and unplug.

ie: If youa re soldering a female on a pack. Have a spare male plugged into it while you solder the leads on. This way it won't get misshapen and be a PITA to plug nad unplug after it cools.
