I was having a great day with my leopton. I got in 2 flights that were stellar IMO  .
Third fligh ended short. Saw smoke and power died! Managed an auto out of view in some tall grass.
Good news is zero damage to the lepton. Not sure how hard it hit as it was out of view. Bad news is the Jazz is toast. Literally. Ordered an Align 75 amp esc to try out in the meantime.

I should have the align esc in it for this weeken at the sheep.
That thing made some kind of awful smell. My car still smells like it. Heli does too.
Ewww.
That sucks. I have the same ESC. Was it under partial load?

forward flight.
Pretty rare for a Kontronik. I have run a few and never had any problems with them. Come to think of it I don't recall ever hearing about any having a problem. Luck of the draw I guess.
Send it to Hobby Services. They're pretty good at covering warranty issues.

No Chance the motor windings may have shorted internally? e.g. the insolation melted due to heat.. I have seen that take out ESC's before and then you get a new one only to smoke the new one!

not likley as I was less than 2 minutes into the flight. Guess I better check to be sure though. Would suck to smoke a new esc.

Wow, maybe it over-amped and just fried it? What kind of motor are you running? Pinion?

Running the Hyperion 3025-12T with 24 tooth pinion. Has flown quite a few times on this setup w/o problems.

That is scary because that is the same setup i was thinking of running, but I will be using a Jazz 80-6-18. Did you ever find out why it burnt up like that? Does your motor still work? What were your throttle curves?

Jon, I am sorry you may have already posted this but which Jaz was this that you were running?
I was going to try the 40-6-18 but decided to order a 80-6-18 instead so far the only problem was when I switch from the Hacker A30 8XL to a 10XL and ran 4s after about 2 minintes in the flight the motor shut off, I didn't have a FDR on so I am not sure what happend. I do know the my 4S pack was not in the best shape and I think that is what let go as it was a little puff when I landed.
I switch back the the 8XL on 3S until my new 4s pack shows up

Jon, so how did the Align ESC work out for you in the mean time?

It was ok. Slow start is not as slow as I would have liked but it worked.
Good value for the price.

Yes I disabled slow start and use a gradual low stick curve and enabled a delay for coming out of T-hold should i need to bail on an auto...
So far so good but I felt slow start kind of stunk...
Oh also be careful.. sometimes slow start will hang on restart throttle up. e.g. shoot an auto and land, then try to spool back up and there is some weird problem with it not always starting back up right away unless you work the throttle up and down a few times.
