I have a GY240 and I have been using rate mode because I have had problems getting HH (Heading Hold) mode it to work in the past with it. It would usually walk one direction in spurts.
My previous experience with Heli's from 1991 was with mechanical rate gyros so I felt comfortable using that mode and figured HH mode would not be that much better as long as I tweaked the rate mode enough.
I got everything setup for HH mode and as soon as I got it working and I moved around a bit I was extremely excited to see how locked in the tail was. I was thinking there was nothing that could break that direction hold. About 2 minutes after I got it up in the air in HH mode a BIG gust of wind came through 10 - 15MPH sideways against the heli. I didn't notice the storm rolling in on me. Even with the wind like it was the tail was still locked in like it was being held by the hands of the heli gods. I just barely got the thing down between 2 gusts of wind though. The thing was going up and down by a huge amount(glad I put at least -3 pitch in normal mode or I don't think I would have got it down). Thank goodness I train in the sim with 10 - 20mph gusts about every week to make sure I am prepared for that situation.
I don't see how I ever lived without HH mode even though I have only used it for 2 minutes. I am psyched about my next flight since this one was cut short. I don't think I have been this excited about the heli even when I first got it :).
