View Full Version : Hacker motor install - what a pain

Well I just about have my Lepton finished and ready to fly, but I have to tell you that installing the Hacker A30-10XL was a royal pain to install. I followed the manual steps thinking no matter what I could always drop the motor tray as was previously mentioned here and install the motor. Fat chance of that happening let me tell you.

The Hacker uses 4 bolts for mounting. Unfortunately you can't get a hex key on a handle in there. You could get a stock (90 degree) key, but you can't see the mounting holes to line up the bolts for the install. So, I wound up removing the motor tray & landing gear entirely and mounted the motor. The I went to install it only to find...

The pinion and shaft hit the rearward landing gear mount. So, that had to be removed as well. Finally got the tray with motor reinstalled only to find that I can't access the bolts from the top to set the gear mesh and tighten the motor. :arggg:

After som fiddling with a high power flashlight I was able to access the front two screws and tighten them up just fine. The rear screws are about 1/4 turn loose, but I had applied some locktight. I figure they will hold, but if I can find a way to get to tehm I will tighten them up as well. I have thought about dropping the tray again just to tighten the rear two screws all the way.

As for the good news, even doing all that for the motor install it only took about 30 minutes to remove the parts and reinstall them.

Really not that big a deal.

Just get the round tip hex keys.
Take out the 2 rotating belt guides and your in business.

Got it in the first time in about 15 minutes(and that's including setting the mesh).

Luca,

As I mentioned previously I had dropped the motor tray. Did no good.

Mard,

I used round tipped hex keys. That how I was able to set the front bolts. As for the rear, well I don't want to remove the rotating belt guides. That's even more of a pain once the helicoptor is put together. I'd much rather drop the motor tray again.

But I consider this a serious design flaw from Hirobo. They really should have done a better job designing motor access and should have definitely changed their instruction manual to install the motor/gear mesh at a much earlier stage to avoid this type of a problem.
