Ok going through this Ion I bought and I think there might be something missing on it. I went through the main bearings etc all look good but one this was abit strange on this. A friend of mine that knows MA machines pointed out that there is no sleeve between the main gear and bottom bearing block. On the fury etc there is a sleeve to space the main gear from the bottom bearing block and this sleeve is same size as inner race of the 10x19 bearing, and a shim or two to have proper height to accomadate the back tr drive cone gear meash to the main gear. The sleeve part number 0115-22 on the other MA machines as well as #0619 shim, and the other two that you can get 0865-6, and 0865-7.... My question is as my friend was not sure of this either is, are this sleeve and shims supposed to be on the Ion like the other MA machines? I could not find them in the Ion manual online however I am not very good at understanding fully the blowup one that is available as it skips steps, and I can not see where it shows these, please help.

I ran into this question a few months ago, while trying to get the tail driving bevel gear mesh set right on a Tempest. The advice I received from a few folks was to take that sleeve out, and set the mesh with a piece of paper, like we so often do, and lock it in place with the upper and lower mast split rings. On the two used Ion's I've bought, one had the sleeve, one didn't. I've taken to leaving it off and setting the gear mesh as mentioned above. I haven't had a problem yet. It does seem easier than experimenting with shims to get it right.

Ok so no issues with it creating bearing play or anything like that? I was thinking there should be something making sure the bottom bearing stays seated as well to better support the assembly..?

Mesh, ,,,That is basically how I did it was with a peice of paper get it close, then slide the cone gear back just a touch to get smooth mesh.

THey stopped using the sleves a year or two ago I think. You can easily set the crown gear mesh by hand.

Ok just wanted to be sure, thanks for the "know how" :D So i get ya that you guys have it that way, but is there any benifit mechanically to having them in there in your opinion? I mean support strength / performance wise, sorry this may be a silly question I just like to have everything 100% +. :)

If the were needed they would still be in the kits.

Go to the MA site click on Helicopter kits --> Stratus --> Instructions for the full kit and you can see how it all goes together. The Ion-X manual is there, but you need to get the drawings to see the detail. I have scoured my PC and can't find the damn drawings. I would bet Tony (misskimo) has a copy of the Ion-X drawings, or Chris from MA could probably email you a copy.

Shawn,

Don't be sorry or you might be sorry you didn't ask!

The Ion-x is also my first Xcell heli. I get a lot of help from experienced local Xcell Nitro guys. Don't be afraid to ask them for their advice!

Cheers,

Tom C

Fritts was nice enough to post the drawings for me on his web-site a month back.
